I found a 1985 944 in Florida, The outside and inside are rough but pretty good for a high school age person. It is supposed to be having the belts changed today so that is a non issued. The only thing that concerns me is a loud knocking or ticking sound coming from the top of the motor. I think it had 112k miles. It also came it an almost complete parts car that was missing the front clip, but they are different colors so i don't think that matters. He was asking for $3500 but I am sure he would take $3000 cash to get rid of them. Does anyone know the the noise would be? _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

The noise is probably the car yelling...."I am too expensive, keep looking" _________________ 87-924s |

the noise is 1 of 2 things, either a colapsed hydrolic lifter, of a bearing gone bad probably _________________ 3 928s, |

Find out if one of the belts was broken, and if that is the reason that the owner is replacing the belts before the sale.
The noise could be a bent valve due to a previously broken belt, or a collapsed lifter (noise could cure itself if the car has been out of service for a long period, and the lifter just needs to pump up). A collapsed lifter can be replaced without removing the head (the cam tower assembly must be removed), and the belts would have to come off.
The noise could also be the normal noise of the electrically operated fuel injectors (ticking or buzzzzzing). |

The fuel injector noise is fairly quiet and will be suppressed as the engine revs. A compression test will reveal a bent valve, but I'd be surprised if it ran at all. Probably a lifter. Replace them all. The cam tower is a PITA. In addition to the belt issue the fuel rail has to come off. The gasket with the head must be replaced, and will want to leak afterwards anyway. Pay close attention to torques.
Three grand and it still has this fun to look forward to. Run away!! _________________ '87 924S, now in better hands. Have a look. |

Maybe one valve cup is jammed like my did? Especially when the motor is running cold. _________________ -87 924s euro

I paid 1800 for my 87 924S and drove it for a month or more before I learned about needing to know the belt age/condition. I changed the belts, idlers, waterpump, seals and headgasket for about $700. There is a small tear in the Driver's seat and the dash has an overlay but other than that it runs great and looks good.
I was offered $3500 for it not long ago I still have it
I think I would keep looking or offer about $1500. _________________ Glenn Neff
