|
|
Pfff, an electrical problem again...
I have renewed the alternator ground and the voltage regulator
and seriously cleaned the connections at the back of the alternator.
Engine started fine, but when I reached my destination and turned
the contact to off, the engine kept running and both 'handbrake on' and
'alternator not charging' lights very dimly came on. Furthermore,
with the key removed I could still swith everything on.
So to stop the engine, I thought I would just let it stall by engaging
the clutch a little bruskly. Being close to some steel container, I thought
I would better back up a little. When I depressed the clutch and engaged
the reverse, the engine stopped (still with depressed clutch)
(major , but ).
What on earth is happening??
Did I short something by accident when reinstalling the alternator??
With contact key removed, I wiggle the most left relais in the
relais bank, and the tachometer shows 2000 revs (engine off)
pffff, what is going on??? |

More than likely you need another ignition switch, I have had this problem in a few cars it is just the switch, You should be able to get one at your local parts store for $5-$15
You may also have some electrical shorts, Uusally a good cleaning of all the under dash electrical connections will take care of most of that. Good Luck _________________ Life is to short to be looking for something? |

Thanks for the advice.
Are you sure it has nothing to do with the
alternator??
I noticed that (engine turned off, key out of contact) when
I disconnect the 3-pole connector near the battery/firewall,
the beformentioned lights go out. .
It can't be the alternator-rectifier or something?
In one of the old posts I read that broken diodes in
the rectifier can cause stray currents, so....
These electric problems remain mysterious to me.
Thanks in advance,
Duncan |

my car also has done this twice now, one more serious than the other...
the first was when my alternator fried itself as well as the starter motor.
the starter was the biggest culprit in keeping the engine going, just wouldn't shut off until i killed the power from the battery, i was most amazed at when i pulled all the spark leads out of the dizzy that the motor was still going...
the second event occured from a sticking throttle body disc, the audi throttle body conversion i did has an aluminium/tin composition i think and it tends to stick in the throat of the throttle body... the brass ones are much better (found in stock configuration)...anyway the cure was to pull the throttle cam back and let it snap shut, but pulling of the throttle body and adjusting the centering of the disc is needed...
hope you dont need a new starter/alternator, i needed both...and thanks to the shoddy workmanship of the bunghole who repaired the alternator i had to have it done twice....ouch it hurt my walet...Leadfoot |

| definitly sounds like your ignition switch when you pressed the clutch in it more than likely just made enough shaking of the contacts to shut it off. Those switches are screwy. When mine went i had a hard time starting i would have to start it then put the key in the off position then to run really quickly. then to shut it off I'd have to wriggle the key while in the off possition |

Thanks everyone for the advice, but , fortunately, the car has healed
itself . Most probably because the wetter has changed for the better.
I do think the 3way alternator cable is broken or the starter cable,
causing some sort of semi-short where they meet at the starter.
I hope to replace the cables soon. |

| If you suspect those cables, replace them before they cause a fire.... |
