I just finished taking out the starter. well mostly I removed all the heat shileds and removed the bolts and the starter can be pulled out after I take out the oil filter....theres no way it will come out if I don't remove the filter (just replaced the filter and oil so its a waste).
anyways while under the car i had drops of coolant running down the exhuast pipes and dripping on my face adn I looked up and there were spots of coolant on the clutch bellhousing right around where the starter is.
so there must be a coolant leak somewhere on top. I want to know what the possibilities are.
I just see some coolant hoses up there and felt around them and they weren't wet but its kinof hard to reach everything behind the engine.
also question about the starter, someone in the other post said that Bosche sr10x is the right starter that fits. I'm wondering where I can find this for the cheapest price (not from the net), should I try vw/ audi parts dealers? _________________ 78 924 sold.

The starter you're after is most probably stocked by VW, but they'll want to know a VW model/year/etc to reference it. When you tell them it's for a Porsche, they'll lose interest. Anyway, that's what happens over here. They might be able to find it by the Bosch part number, but if you can give them a VW model thay're usually more helpful.
About your coolant loss: don't forget that core plugs (you may refer to them as freeze plugs over there) can rust out and start to leak. Just a thought... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

freeze plugs? sorry I don't know what that is.
what vw model has the same starter, if anyone knows please tell me.
yeah they will ask what vw model.
Bosche sr10x is probably not the full bosch part number they are usually long numbers. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Core plugs (or freeze plugs in the US) are usually thin steel dics pressed into the sides of the block and the end of the cylinder head. They sit between the water jacket and the outside world.
The idea is that if you forget to put anti-freeze into your coolant and it freezes in the cold weather, the core (freeze) plugs get pushed out by the water expansion which releives the pressure in the block and head so that they don't crack.
As they're made of quite thin steel, over the years they can rust through from the inside and then start to leak. Then you need to poke them out (usually with screwdriver) and press a new one in. They're usually quite cheap to buy. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Another possibility, though I've also had the leaking freeze plug (after not quite getting a new one installed properly, on the racecar) would be the heater control valve and/or associated hoses. They're at the back of the head over the bellhousing, and I could see the coolant making its way over to that side, conceivably. Best accessed after removing the ignition coil. _________________ Vaughan Scott
