| I am considering buying a 1981 924. It has 35 K miles on it...and is a second owner car since 84. Price is 5K. Does this sound reasonable? The interior is in pretty good condition with only a few cracks on the dash. The carpets and seats are in good condition. Car has no leaks or body trouble. I appreciate any comments what so ever. I want to become a Porsche owner, but will be patient until I find the right car. |

if it is an 81 and the clock reads as only 35k I doubt it is correct but is possible, check the odometer as it probably just broke at that many miles, $5k is way overpriced for an 81 924 NA, if it was a turbo then that is fine if it is in good running condition, w/ 5bolt disc all around _________________ 3 928s, |

| Where are you from? When was the last tune up? And are you a mechanic or have you had a mechanic check out the car? Welcome also. |

If the car really only has 35K miles on it, you have come across a rather rare car.
But the car still would not be worth $5K. Not with cracks in the dashboard. A replacement dashboard cost $1500 the last time I checked, and the Dealer charges about 8 hours to install one.
For $5K I would expect a clean original car with no damage of any sort.
Sounds like the car you are looking at is worth more like $2500-$3000 tops. and only if you can verify the mileage and there are no mechanical problems found at a mechanical prepurchase inspection. |

| I am in Albany NY. I am having a mechanic look at the car in a couple of days...I was just trying to get some ideas from other people. The owner passed away and his mother is selling it for him. It was apparantly worked on at our local Porsche dealership so I am going to call them tomorrow to see if they have a history for the car. |

| They should be willing to give you the info. As for his mother selling the car she may not know what the car is worth. Porsche=$$$, to some people. Chances are the cars odometer has rolled over and states incorrect mileage. Mine says 16,000 kms, I know that it's 116,000 from records. Try to find out because that mileage, if accurate, would be great. |

Just for your info, the NADA blue book values for an "81 924 is $2325 for poor, $3475 for good, and $4625 for excellent. Poor is not a parts car and excellent is not a concourse show winner.
Like anything else, what it is worth is what it will ultimately get. If this car is really nice, and gives your heart flutters, ask her where she came up with $5 g's and offer her $3000 for starters. There are plastic covers for dashs that are ok looking for $80 and they pop right on. I heard if you buy a factory dash it will just crack again. There is a few outfits that will form you a new dash from your old one for around $800.
Any old car, even with 35k is going to have problems, just because of plastic and rubber ageing. Good luck! |
