I didn't drive my 924S for a few days and left it outside in heavy rain.

As I took the first few corners, I heard a sloshing noise at the front of the car. After a short journey (three left hand corners), the passenger footwell (left side in UK) was quite wet.

I opened the bonnet and found (at the windscreen end) a 'trough' with a large amount of water in it - this must have been the footwell water source.

What is that trough for - is there to gather rainwater? If so, why is it putting all the water into the footwell?! (That can't be right). Is there a drain from that trough that is blocked or something?

Yes - there are drains on each side. They drain forward into the engine compartment and they get clogged with leaves and whatever else. They're approx. 3/4" in diameter - short tubes with rubber flaps on the ends. Find them and poke 'em with a stick 'til they're clean.
Obviously, you also have a leak/s in that area too. Often it's rust near the battery. If you're lucky like me, it might only be old cracked seam sealer and a little surface rust that needs to be scraped, cleaned, rustproofed and resealed.

Found the drains. Seems to be a cable coming out of one running near it - is that right. Unblocked the drains anyway. Battery no longer near-submerged. Cheers.

That would have to be something a previous owner added. Not a major problem - maybe if you had an exhaust leak up front, you might get a bit of it through the ventilation system. Other than that it might just cause the drain to clog up easier - they need to be checked for cleaning regularly anyway.

On my 81 there is one more drain that is on the drivers side in the inside corner of the drain tray underneath the wiring for the windsheild wiper motor.

If you're not lucky, you end up with half a square foot of sheet metal that has to be cut out, and large sections that need to be removed from firewall.

I had the same problem. It came from a rusted through spot that drained into the passanger foot compartment. The hole was about 2" wide by 3". I resolved to using fiberglass and bondo to cover the hole. After that I sprayed the area with underbody coat to make it black. It resulted in the car reaking of underbody coat for a few weeks. It solved the problem, and because of the spray most people can't tell that anything has been done to that area.

I would suggest you at least take the battery out and make sure that you don't have a rust hole, or one developing.

Edit: I used the firberglass mesh, for intergrity, then packed bondo on it.

I'm going to do a proper job and weld it when I have the engine out, probably weld in some extra bracing along there firewall too, try to prevent any future cracking.

Is this a silly question, but:
Mine is a 1987 924S. Aren't these models fully galvanised? If so, will they not suffer from this problem?
(I haven't had a chance to check around the battery for myself yet, so maybe I'll know the answer if I do!)

IIRC galvanizing is coating the steel with zinc. Very effective until battery acid eats away the zinc. The OEM battery was prone to leak, or so I heard. I had a quarter-sized surprise under mine. Just surface rust, for now.
