The other day I took my car to the same garage that installed my WUR. I had asked them to do 2, simple things and take a look about why my car can be hard to start. I had asked them to replace the fuel filter that I installed inbetween my pump and my gastank (I know my tank is in bad shape and that the filter will need replacing regularly) It was just to save me hassle because it was pouring and I didn't want to do work under my car, instead, they told me they would do it and then simply looked at it, told me it was replaced recently because it was still shiny (which I had already told them) and they then said I need a new pump. I had asked them to look at the shifter because it would vibrate pretty wildy above 4000 rpm (agian, something I could do myself as I belive it is simply the bolt that holds the rod in place at the transaxle as everything is in fine with the pivoting lever) and they told me I had a bad bushing, which bushing? well, its complicated, refer to your manual? Iv checked the manual and it didn't refer to any bushing needing work at the transaxle. Where is the bushing, in the cabin or at the transaxle? the mechanic just said it was around the tourque tube. At the point I relized I had just wasted $35.00 bucks. He then told me that the car needed a full tune up. So I ask, what work you will you preform on the tuneup? check belts? check belt tensioners? valves? They wouldn't tell me what work they would do, I would have to simply drop my car off and they would "fix it" and charge me for it without giving me any estimate. The only reason I payed was because they took the time to run a compression check (which checked out an even 180 across all four) The thing that really annoyed me though, I took the time to install a switch to activate the theremo time switch which worked wonderfly when starting the car when hot. I press the switch, the car fires to life, when before I would have to crank it for quite awhile. They told me it was there (of course it was, I just installed it) and that I shouldn't have a switch running to it.

The main problem I need to fix, the car, when either cold or hot starts and runs rough and will die unless you give it some gas in the first seconds of being run. I start the car and keep the throttle fully depressed, the car kinds chugs along slowly and then picks up like normal and I keep it going at 3000rpm for a few seconds, when I let off the gas the idle dips low for a second (sometimes low enough to die) and then evens out at around 1000. After that it will run just fine. I know my plug wires and one of my intake boots are bad and have already been ordered. Is there any other suggestions? If I went ahead and replaced the thermo time switch with a new unit, will that affect my hot start problem? Thanks.

first offwhen you go to a shop, make sure they are very SPECIFIC, I never get dicked around, and they show me EXACTLY what they want to do before doing it. and show me the defective parts and why they are defective, if I dont agree then they leave the old part in,

as per you starting I would say fix/replace the boot that is damaged, also replace the sparkplug wires, as per the switch you wired into the thermo timeswitch how did you do this, did you just run a positive wire with a switch to the 5th injector, or what did you do, if you ran a wire with a push and hold switch running to the 5the injector then as you are starting the car hold that down for 10sec and it will not hurt anything, as per your hard hot start, how are your fuel accumulators? do they leak, why did the garage say your fuel pump needed replacement? might they have found the check valve inside to be defective and that might be causeing the hard start?

I wonder if the bushing you need is this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=33736&item=2437315835 . I bid on it cause I thought I may need it one day.

Trust me if you own enough cars, go to enough shops, or live long enough you will find your share of poor repair shops out there.

I've run into this estimate phobia as well. It seems (to me) to be a Porsche shop phenomenum. All you can do is continue to ask: "How much for this?" If they say they won't know until they get in there, which is reasonable, ask for the worst case. I have noticed that the bill does comes closer to the estimate at independent shops than with a dealer.

It has always been my thought
"If I want the Job done right, I'll do it myself"

Yet there has been times, I have had to have work done before, And I am the biggest pain in the Butt, I don't leave my cars side. Kind of luck surgery. I have seen people ripped off by to many shops to leave my car in the hands of any mechanic, And if they have a problem with it, I go somewhere else. Simple

and that is why you tell them you show me the defective parts and tell me why they are defective, and I will approve replacement or tell them, no it is NOT defective

Thanks guys, I definatly felt I was being jerked around. The switch is listed in the hot start fix in the faq (by David Russle i belive) It is wired from a ground point, to a pushbutton switch to the thermo time switch, activitating it manually forces the thermo time switch on. I have replaced my accumulator with a 40cc a few months ago. It may have started leaking agian. I guess I will check with the screw later. I have a 78 with the 4speed. I couldn't see how those bushing could be used for my transaxle. I belive I know where it is not tight and I just need the weather to hold over to my day of so I can take care of it.
