|
|
I wonder if anyone would be so kind as to take a measuring tape and check the distance from the rear view mirror mount to either side and top to bottom of the windshield. I need to get the car through an insurance inspection and have to install the rear view mirror on a new windshield after the body shop broke the original. I don't believe the mirror is centered side to side and know it's not, top too bottom. The correct measurements would simplify this detail. _________________ Doodle

If it helps, flip the visors most of the way down and place mirror as to not interfer with them during movement. _________________ 1978 924 n/a |

Thanks 78 924 N/a. Your suggestion would definitely work the best except I haven't installed the visors as yet. When the car was in the body shop I had a hole cut in the roof to accomodate an aftermarket sun roof. The sun roof installer's challange will be to fabricate a new headliner which compliments the rest of the interior. In order to facilitate his task I thought it easiest to just provide all the parts and let him assemble them. My challenge is to get the car too him. I have to first get the car through an insurance safety inspection which requires all mirrors to be in place. Once this is done I can get the car insured and registered which will help with my challenge.
It would sure help if someone was willing to take a few minutes and a measuring tape and could provide the correct measurements. Any takers? _________________ Doodle

OK, it's centered left-right (as you might expect), and 4.75" down (that's a measurement to the center of the mounting "dot" from the outer windshield trim. I measured it on the outside.
You may find, to get a good center, that the dome light provides the best reference. My mirror is centered on it. _________________ Vaughan Scott

| Why do you need the rear view to pass inspection? In Canada you just need two side mirrors, right? I had this problem a few years ago, and passed without it. Call ahead to see if you need it. |

Thanks again Vaughan. Hope it wasn't too much of an inconvenience. I now have the necessary reference points to deal effectively with this detail. Not likely, but hopefully one day I'll be able to return the favour in some small way. _________________ Doodle

My insurance company provided me with a form to have filled out by a Mechanic licensed too do inspections. My mechanic of choice feels that if this form asks specifically about number and placement of rear view mirrors they consider them to be a safety item and he's not prepared to risk his license over what he considers to be an easy fix. Besides, sometimes it would be nice to have a bigger picture of everything that is behind me. Motorcycles provide a perfect example in my mind of the kind of vechicles side mirrors alone may not detect behind me. I guess to answer your question I'm anal enough to think this is important. _________________ Doodle

| I would replace it as well, but if you didn't need it for inspection you could leave it last on the list. |

if the car didn't come with it, then it doesn't need it!!, that is how it is here in BC anyway _________________ 3 928s, |
