Ok, so I was continuing the investigations into my problem last night... decided to pull all the injectors and check them, so naturally i bunged all the plugs back in first and fired her up since we'd been messing on so much, i'd changed the points over just because i had a nice new set sitting there... still on 3 cylinders... pulled the injectors and nothing immediate hit me... bunged them back in...
Fired the car up again and for some reason i realised i'd not actually
pulled the HT leads to confirm the cylinder that was off - ok, i'd done it
initially, but not since dismissing the rings/valves... so i pulled #4 (the
suspect) she died to 2 cylinders! huh?!! this was the one giving me grief
initially! so i pulled #3 - same! pulled #2 - same again! that left #1 -
pulled the lead and nothing changed (obviously)....
Now i'm bamboozled... i'd changed the plug and lead on #4 initially and it
was definately wet hence not sparking, i'd decided the last 2 nights that it didnt seem wetenough to be losing the spark, but it was hard to tell if it was petrol or oil... so I pulled the plug out of #1 - wet... hmmm.. now the spare plug i had was a Bosch, all the others were Beru... i pulled the plug out of the spanner - Bosch! I'd mixed them up when i put them back in!!!! damn... tried the Beru plug I'd pulled the other day - 3 cylinders... hmmm.. shot to the car shop with 5 minutes to closing time and grabbed another plug, fitted it (you can see what's coming can't you?!).. 4 cylinders firing sweet...
arse.
looks like i'm running a bit rich though, maybe burning a little oil from
somewhere, but both those plugs were obviously giving a sh*te or no spark so no wonder...
So, right now, I'm being nick'd as "Sparky" by my wife, understanding as she is...
Feel free to extract the urine as you see fit also... lol... ahh well, it's
a learning curve isn't it.. just glad I took the advice to check things over
again before ripping the engine apart!

Dont feel bad. I had a S-10 pick up once. I changed all the plugs. The truck ran fine for about a week then was running like garbage. I tried everyhting under the sun. Couldnt fix it. Took it to the shop told them the plugs and wires were just changed. They spent a week couldnt find the problem. Finally i decide to pull the head and see what the hell is going on. First step remove plugs. What do i find. a detonated plug. I mean blown up good. Ceramice was even meleted. All that work and money and if i would have just checked the plugs again it would have been fixed in less than a hour.
Still dont how the dealership didnt find it though? other than they suck just about as bad as i do. _________________ Polish your apc banner and shut up |

I just feel a gimp for getting all panicky and not thinking straight... I'm no great mechanic when it comes to diagnosis, but normally i'd make mehodical checks and then re-check them again before asking for help.. this time i freaked because she'd been off the road a while earlier in the year and i didn't want that again.... lol...
Mind you, it stumped 3 friends/neighbours who've a lot more years experience under their belts than i have
I'll feel even happier after a nice long run out tonite... |
