Anyone used the turbo rebuild kit that Partwerks has? They say it fits all year k26, and 79-82 924 OK. My turbo was new 6 years and only 2kmiles ago. PO claims it sat in a field - interior vouches for that. Anyway I'm assuming new seals are in order and wonder if the kit is the way to go. Comments?

| I would pay a reputable turbo shop to rebuild the unit unless you want do die a painful death from all the shrapnel a home rebuild would produce. |

Someone here on the Board recently re-did their own under the watchful eye of someone who does truck turbos at work. Can't remember who it was that posted, but it was a success story though. I've heard (and believe) that these things can self-destruct pretty easily simply by scraping off some carbon from the vanes. Things will get out-of-balance in a real hurry at the incredible RPM's they turn. Check the archives for some discussion within the past 4-6 months _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

The word turbo is short for turbine. They spin at an incredibly fast rate and unless you have access to a balancing machine I would definitley NOT do it yourself.I work on gas turbine engines for a living and know this from first hand.I have also seen the damage from a comressor blade that let go at 30,000 RPM- frightening.I found a really good shop here in Vancuver that will rebuild your unit for $450 Can.assuming the wheels don't need replacing.Let me know if you want the name of the place. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

hey Kenodog, there is actually a place in richmond that will do it from $450 - $550, and they carry rebuild kits for $150 (all prices cdn funds) as the turbo was working fine before I am going to try the kit myself with munkpuppy as he is buying the car and that stuff, but I dont predict a problem, and if we get it apart and fine componants are really worn then I will take it to the shop and say do your thing. but if the compnants are fine just mark the direction they cam off and put them back on to a T and you shouldn't have any problems _________________ 3 928s, |
