My '81 931 with '82 Euro motor is running fine at the moment except for the turbocharger which appears to be in good order and tight but maybe a little too tight after sitting 8 years. Mechanic buddy said drive it a while and it may just loosen up. Hasn't happened yet but I'd hate to steal my '80's if it doesn't loosen up. Any similar experiences? It's amazing it has as much power as it does without the turbo but I guess that's the Euro 8.5 compression ratio.

drivin' it anyhow,

Yeah, I'd say run some good synthetic through it. You might even try running it gently with a quart of ATF substituted in for a quart of oil; it's got excellent detergent properties, and can clean out sticky lifters, etc.

Just don't run it too hard with ATF in there, I'd be concerned about it leaving deposits in the turbo if not given adequate cool-down time.

My 79's turbo would freeze up (couln't hear it spool-up) on occasion, and then for no apparant reason start working again minutes later. Didn't happen all the time, but it was disconcerting when it did. One day, hundreds of miles from home I noticed the turbo didn't spool up as I hit the on-ramp on the interstate heading home after a week-long business trip. The turbo never spun again. I suspect that the 200+ mile trip home cooked whatever oil was left in the bearings and sealed it's fate.

If I were you, I'd pull it before it cokes up so badly that you can't (possibly) refurbish it with a less-expensive rebuild kit, instead of having to send it somewhere for a complete overhaul. ...just my $0.02

Thanks guys, we're pulling it out this weekend and if it is buggered I'll steal one from the '80. Joe, all the bodywork is done and I'm adding extras like the rear torsion bar, intercooler etc as the stock stuff checks out okay. I'll post pictures soon.

ciao,

Guess what I found rattling around inside my exhaust side turbine, pieces of exhaust valve from the former engine. Didn't seem to have damaged anything, so back on it goes. Wish me luck.

Well the 931's running again and has some power now which is a massive improvement but the turbine whistle's like no man's biz when she spools up. Wierd! Next step is to drive a while to 'standard-form' trouble shoot, then put on the boost guage, the boost reg and the intercooler.

Whistles like there's a cruiser in pursuit!
And you're right Lizard, my other 931 didn't whistle either.

i test drove an '80 931 a while ago and the turbo whistle was much louder than normal. i don't think this is the sign of a happy turbine.

Check the pressure ducting joints for leaks. A bad gasket-seal at one/any of the joints will whistle really loud too.

Well are your exhaust nuts on really tight, or can you pull the exhaust to check the play fairly easily?
Did you check the play before?

If you don't want to take the exhaust off, you can barely get an awkward shape coat hanger, or whatever (bendable screwdriver, ,etc.).. into the intake side. I don't think you can really tell much, but if you can check the play on the intake side barely, it's easier than the exhaust side at least.

CMXXXI gets the prize! The compressor side tubing needed tightening and the airleak was throwing off the accumulator at low idle as well. Sounded like jet engine turbines at 100+MPH but it's ok now. I'm sure I shocked a few innocent highway travelers.
