I'm having a custom tank made for a project I have going, but have a problem getting someone to weld it out of aluminium without too much porosity. I have heard you can get sealants to put in tanks, can anyone recommend a product? Can you describe the process of sealing the tank?

Also, how big a gap can these fill? Someone suggested that I have the tank rivited and then sealed, but I'd be surprised if the available sealants would be suitable, does anyone know if this would work?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Aluminum tanks will need to be welded. Easy for any welder familiar with aluminum.

Back when I still thought that British cars were really cool (rebuilding a 68 MGB-GT fixed that notion), I was reading through a Moss Motors catalogue, and I remember seeing a tank etching kit which was used to get the crud out of old tanks and then reseal them. I would think the sealant to be available seperately... might want to try your local auto parts shop like NAPA. They may have something for you.

A couple of folks here have mentioned some sealant product they got originally for motorcycle tanks, but either did use it, or intended to use it on their 924 tanks. Do an archive search, it should turn up the relavent threads.

The Eastwood company sells a gas tank sealer. I've never used it though.

You might want to check your local radiator shop. Most will also do fuel tanks. Aluminum for sure. It's a plastic sealant which they apply. Basically pour it in and swish it around. Beware not to plug up any feed lines. If you take the tank to them it's usually very reasonable. s/b under a hundred dollars and they'll guarantee it. They are most likely to be equipped to do a pressure test for leaks on something you would have made up. Try a motorcycle shop for aluminum welding. They're very familiar with aluminum and if not equipped themselves they'll be able to refer you.
