Do you know your cars weight?
Mine was on a scale last summer and the guy told me 980 kg's {2156 lbs}. Does that seem low? |

Sounds rather low to me. Should come in somewhere around 2600 lbs or so. You might try a different scale to compare.

How long have you had your car? You're just finding that out now?
How much weight would one save because of the FG body on a 1977 924? I don't think mine was that heavy to start with {early=not fully galvanized} |

Inside the hood by the wiper motor there should be a plaque with the vehical weight. Mine is 2395 lbs. Oddly it reads 1450 front and 1940 rear, not exactly a 50/50 ballance.
As for fibergalss I saw a hood advertised on ebay and they claimed the steel hood weighed 50 lbs and the fiberglass replacment weighed 22 lbs. It is just a guess but if you were to replace fenders, hood, and bumpers you would probably save about 150 lbs. However it would be expensive probably around $1200. _________________ 1981 924 NA

I already have the kit Roger. I was wondering how much poundage it saved me. 150 lbs is ok, not great by any means. I am looking for a lighter hatch {for weight and mine is starting to leak and a few defrost lines are not working}, for the most part I leave my passenger seat out and I am very seriously thinking about removing my back seat totally. I don't carry a spare or a jack or any tools {that's what friends are for!} If I do what I listed will it make a noitceable difference in the power to weight ratio? Enough to make the work worthwhile? P.S. What level octane do you run? I have been told to run 89, 91, 93 from all different sources. I run 93 to be safe, is this what I have to do or is regular unleaded just as good |

If I remember correctly the regular 924 was around 2,300-2,400 lbs. It's the 924S that's around 2,700 lbs.

I started running 87 and I have no problems. I have heard before and I have seen it posted on this board that European standards for octane ratings are different. My Dad had the same issue with a VW. I would run 87 unless you hear a pinging/rattling noise under acceleration or if the car does not shut off as soon as you turn the key off.
924 turbo had some good info in this post

As for the weight loss I couldn't say how much of an improvement in the power to weight ratio you will see. If you go the complete route an delete the A/C, all of the interior (carpet, sound proofing and seats), and the bumper shocks along with the fiberglass kit and replacing the glass with lexan you would lighten the car by 350-450 lbs. That should make the car much faster. If you dont mind the looks and the lack of comfort you would probably be very happy with the results. _________________ 1981 924 NA

Fiberglass body kit= yes
A/C= none
passenger seat= none
sound profing= none
carpet= still in/might be next to go
bumper shocks= none
glass replaced with lexan= how much for all? Can the windshield be changed to lexan too?
How about rims? I have Ronal Turbo R10's= heavy as hell! What type of wheel is lightest? I believe it is how they are constructed that make a difference, no?
Console is being taken out and maybe sold, map tray and rear seats also.
It's a 1977 Euro spec 924 with a fiberglass body with the goal being as light as we can get it. I keep the bitch on a diet as well {never a full tank}
How much weight will I save if I take off the back brakes? Worth it? |
