I moved to a 77 911S last week... and "they" took my 87 924S in trade. I wish I could have kept by 924S, but I could only afford to own one car... and the lure of the 911 was too much to resist. I bought the 911 from my local Porsche mechanic, who also sells German cars. I probably never would have bought a 911 (or eally even considered one), unless he had let me drive several of them over the past few months. Giving me the keys to a 911 and telling me to take it out for an hour (solo) is what did the trick.

Compare the two? OK, but I've only had the 911 for a week... and it's just breaking-in a (rather stiff) rebuilt gearbox.
The 924S was an easier car to just get in and drive. Good handling, with reasonable performance. The car wasn't a money pit, but then, is wasn't that cheap to run either. In the course of slightly over 2 years ownership:
* I had all the belts (rollers etc.) replaced, and upgraded to a turbo water pump.
* All of the CV joints needed replacing within the first six months of owning the car.
* Both rear bearings needed to be redone.
* Gas tank cracked at the top. Needed to be pulled and patched up.
* New master cylinder.
Issues I would have had to addressed if I had kept the car:
* Front end/handling getting "darty" at highway speed. Front bearings? Steering rack?
* Oil consumpsion getting heavier. Engine had good compression, but probably needed new valve seals.
And now the 1977 911S:
* Very torquey, even at low revs. Pulls from cleanly 1,500 rpm in 3rd gear... and strongly in 3rd from 2,500 rpm. Pulls really hard in 2nd gear... in 2nd from 3,500 rpm it pushes you back V-8 style into your seat.
* Feels like it's on rails. Very go-kart like. Corners absolutely flat, and feels like it's glued to the road. I haven't lost the rear end yet, but it definitely feels much more like a track car than the 924S (and the stock 924S felt great anyway).
* Harder to drive at first. Gearbox slower. Pedals take getting used to.
* Steering (non-power)... very quick and precise.
* Brakes.. first-class.
* 911 engine is noisier... but what a great noise Thottle respose is instant.
* So far my gas mileage is not as good as the 924S, but I've been punching the throttle a lot with the 911.
* Needs a few minor things done... like the seals on the valve covers, as they are a little leaky.
* On the down side, these cars attract a little too much attention. It was vandalized within the first 4 days that I owned it (driver's mirror damaged).

Watch out for "trailing throttle over steer"!!!
By this I mean, if you are ever already in a corner and realize you are going too fast, don't lift, hang on and steer through it.
I suggest you enter an autocross asap to acquaint yourself with the car's handling quirks. |

Oh boo-hoo... you no longer own a 924S. How EVER will you survive slumming around in that awful 911 of yours? Looking for sympathy or just bragging?! You're a bastard! Now bring that damn car over so I can drive it again! _________________ 1975 911S |

I dare you to follow my 931 through the twisties.....
You'll be looking at me disappearing around the next turn through your rear view mirrors. (After the dust settles) |

"I dare you to follow my 931 through the twisties..... "
Yeah... quite possibly. Although, after owning the 911 for a month now I can give you a few observations:
My 87 924S was stock, with the exception of the wider 205 Michelin Pilots. Now, I fully expected my 911 to possibly be down a notch from my 924S in the handling department... however, so far this is not so.
* The 911 has more steering feedback
* Stiffer suspension, with almost no roll
* More cornering power than my 924S
*In spite of all of the talk of 911's being "tail happy", I have not yet lost the tail, even in hard cornering
*The 911 can exit corners much faster than my 924S, because it's got a lot more low end torque, and it's pretty much instant.
Anyway... your 931 could quite easily be a better handing car than my old 924S, if you had more mods. So if could be faster than my 911 through the twisties for sure
Now, if you really want to talk about following someone... try chasing Dave with his modified 2.4 liter 912 through the twisties! |

That'll be especially hard now that my carbs are sporting bigger venturis and fatter jets. It seems a little more "peppy" than it was... _________________ 1975 911S |
