I think I may be babying my car.
The question is:
From a standing start what rpm do you guys shift at?
Do you really gas it, or just let it get to full speed with a minimal amount of pedal?
Pickup seems weak unless I really drive it.
I'm not talking about flooring it.
Just wondering. _________________ 1978 924 95 mile daily driver.

| My power curve is definately at higher revs. I drive it like an Indy car. I also have a new car for a daily driver and bought my 924 as a toy. If I break something, I giggle tow it to my garage and start fixing it...that is the other part of my version of playing with toys. ( the harder you play with your toys the more you have to fix them) With my owners manual there is a series of graphs showing engine performance. They say it all. |

Must admit I do drive my '78 the way she was made to be driven... loads of twisty country roads near me so it's hard to resist the urge... that exhaust note when you're coming down through the gears quickly before a tight bend is just amazing |

| well. in its current state. Any gas more then a quarter or half pedal will cause the car to jump and stutter. So. I drive it like a grandma to a smooth sound 4500 rpm befor putting it into the next gear. |

| Yes. I usually beat mine with a wooden stick. But when I'm really mad I use my fists. O! You mean my car. I thought this topic was about child discipline. My bad. |

Only when it's been bad and put me in the mud. But not when it's the driver's fault.
Naturally I don't really baby the racecar, but tend to take it easy on the turbo, on the street. Rarely rev over 4k. Just don't need to drive it that hard, though I occasionally wind it up to blow out any gunk. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I usually shift between 4 and 5 but not in first gear....I usually use first to just get moving enough to keep tack above 2 when shifting to 2nd...then after that I rev up to 4 or 5 and keep the tack from falling below 3 when shifting.....I downshift to 4th around 45 mph and 3rd around 35 mph....only downshift to 2nd after the turn (90 degree street corner)....the Porches can take a beating as long as you are using common sense and not trying to break something....when I first got my 924 I was babying it until a friend who has owned Porches a long time drove it and said "You gotta make it sound like a Porsche and keep it tacked up".....its fun though _________________ 79 924 "Missy Grey" |

So I guess shifting around 3000-3500 rpms makes me a sissy wimp. I don't wind her out much... I just use 94 octane all the time and am consistent with my Techron fuel system cleanings.
I don't burn rubber, either. Tires are too damn expensive for these cars if you want them to handle the way they should.
My car is a poofter. Owned by a girly girl. But she's in excellent condition (except maybe some pulley bushings... but that's another story...) _________________ "You measure democracy by the freedom it gives it's dissidents, not the freedom it gives it's assimilated conformists." - Abbie Hoffman

Right now I drive her easy, shift at about 3k rpms. I rev it up a bit higher in first because second gear is fairly widely spaced from 1st. Drove the car to the supermarket today for the first time, gave my mom a ride (She kept complaining about the smell and all the funny noises the car made) Then there are times when i like to have fun and shift at 5k rpm, but that's done when parents are in the car. I'm not allowed to drive it by myself until it's checked out by a "professional mechanic." Seems stupid, but by finding a mechanic to check out my car, I found a free 944 hatch. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

city driving in racing mode. 4000 rpm before a shift.
2500-3000 in economy mode
on the highway its:
3000 RPM in 5th for about 70MPH
4000 RPM for 90MPH
4500 for 100 MPH
4700ish for what must be 105, but I havent pushed it faster than that |

Mines different with the redline tb it likes to be perky and delivers a punch anywhere, though starting out and shifting at 4 grand can lead to high speeds where Ill fall off the road straight left turn or right turn. Its a perky powerband. Till the linkage gets the bushings in I think my fast shifts are late so Ill blip the throttle.I still would like to know what my fastest time at 0-60 would be using different aproaches to the modified power band.
Maybe I could shave 1.5 off the stock time. On the next motor I know itll be know prob. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na
