I found a place locally that speciallizes in euro import cars and had a 911 and 944 being worked on. I stopped by and asked for an estimate on rebuilding a 931 engine top to bottom. For a complete rebuild with head and block and all components balanced, etc. he quoted me $2500 if I provide most or all of the parts I want replaced. He said the labor alone would run around $1500. This is my first engine being sent for a rebuild so can someone who has had this done tell me if this is a fair price and if not who I should check out. It just seems like a lot for a four cylinder with me paying for the parts, but I don't know.

Thanks for any advice guys.

Andrew

I would really like to rebuild it myself, but I am only a weekend mechanic and don't have experience with engine internals. I am pretty sure I could install all the new bearings, etc. However I would need to have the machine work done by someone and want to have new JE high compression pistons installed. In this case how much would it be then to have the block and head honed/polished with matching bore, pistons installed, with crank and head balanced and I install all new gaskets, bearings, etc. I know it is not that simple and I haven't covered everything, but in terms of what I can do on my own in regards to the engine rebuild to save money can anyone give some more advice. I have the factory manuals and can do a good deal. Like I said, I just haven't done engine internals before, but would love to learn by practice as much as I can besides the machine work, etc.

Thanks

Did you read the Haynes on engine rebuilding. Its not that hard to fit new pistons .Get a screwdriver and pry out the circle clip then get a socket that fits and tap out the piston pin. Make sure you fit the rods to the pistons so all the arrows line up. Call you machine shops, maybe someone on the board here lives close to you. Id help if Icould.

we were looking at 600 maybe for the labor so yeah this guy is high..

the buddy who is planning on doing the engine rebuilds ( I don't have the time) got smacked by a surburban and got a butt load of road rash so he is waiting on his skin to heal before he starts on this first 931 engine rebuild.

he did a 951 engine and it ran about the same cost but it was a wholesale deal for another company, so he is waiting with a price till he has done one

Ok. So I am assuming that you all would agree that I should take it to a machine shop and then do the rest. I can't wait to get my 931 restored and drive it, but money is tight so it seems I could save a lot doing most of the work. I just need to first save up about $6-700 for the pistons. By the way, I am located here in Virginia, in the valley(Shanendoah Valley that is). Anyway close who knows of a good machine shop nearby or who could help out. The east coast is fairly easy to travel about in so I don't mind a small road trip if someone knows someone they have gone to that is a surefire thing and can save me hundreds of dollars. Also, what about balancing. What is required and should be done when doing a rebuild. One last thing. Thanks for the info guys. I know you hate repeating a lot of things that have been said in the archives (which I am still looking through), but I appreciate it. What would the $600 include by the way.
