Reverse has no syncho. It sounds like clutch drag. The clutch probably isn't completely disengaging so the transmission is still spinning when you're putting it in reverse. If it's a cable clutch, adjust the cable at the release lever arm. If it's hydraulic, there's no real adjustment (at least, nothing near the extent that a cable allows) which means you'll probably have to open everything up and put a new clutch in.
Since 2nd and 4th have synchos, the clutch drag is overcome by the synchros and you aren't grinding gears, but since reverse isn't synchronised (it almost never is, even in modern cars) there's nothing to overcome the clutch drag.
I would recommend that you fix the clutch drag soon, since it will stress the synchroes and a clutch is much easier to replace/adjust than the synchros are.

That did sound/look that way. Stupid of me. While not the first or probably last stupid thing.. I try to reduce them.
Was not my intention, do not think that way..but it did sound/look it. A case of foot in mouth or keyboard in @#$$?
Can't think of a bad Porsche.. past ones for me were poor choice of auto to begin with..by that I mean they needed help or attention beyond my skills and pocket book. One of the nice things about the 924 is that is "seems" closer to what I can handle both skill and $ wise.
I will now do 30 minutes of standing in the corner ??
And then try to work out the problem with the clutch..

Mine has somtimes had troublegetting into reverse. Its seems to happen once or twice a week. This car has had this problem for 20 years its been in the family. I dont worry about it. If you rev the engine a little then it will slide into reverse. _________________ 1981 924 NA

No if it doesn't want to go into reverse I put it in nuetral and raise the RPM's to about 1400 let it settle back down to idle and it slides into reverse. _________________ 1981 924 NA

He said the other gears were hard to engage too, which typically indicates clutch drag also since the synchros are having to work very hard to overcome the dragging clutch.
