|
|
Well, I tried to fire up my car again, the 2nd time since November, the first time the timing was 110 degrees off, so kinda obvious why it didn't start. Anyways, it also had the problem that it was turning over very slowly, in fact it could barely make one revolution. This time, it's a bit better, i replaced the positive terminal, the starter is brand new, and i jumped it from a fairly new benz, so i think the donor had pleanty of juice. Here's some other factors - My battery is COMPLETELY discharged. It's been sitting since about November. Also, the gasoline is about 7 months old, I'm far too lazy to drain the tank, and i'm hoping it'll start with the old gas anyways, I don't care if it runs well, i just need it start right now. Any suggestions? The car fired slightly, one or two cylinders, but the starter couldn't spin the engine fast enough, rough estimate, it's going at maybe 90-110 rpm. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

The battery will be a problem. The old grounds will also be a problem, but cheaper to fix. Did you read the FAQ??? _________________ Vaughan Scott

| you need to put a known good battery in your car and use jumper cables, the dead battery is soaking up all the juice that the good battery in the running car is putting out . also put a few gallons of good gas in your car to help the old gas burn . spraying some carb cleaner into the vacuum port on the throttle body while your trying to start it , might help move things along . a tablespoon of oil down each spark plug hole wouldn't hurt . |

I doubt that there is anything seriously wrong with the engine. I would pull the plugs just to see what they look like. Belive it or not I seen cylinders fill with gas causing the engine to turn over slowly. Also check TDC to make sure the timing is close. Valves not opening properly will cause the engine to turn over slowly.
Then get the new battery that everyone is telling you about!
Gas is not to old, but letting the car sit can cause crud from the tank to get into the system. First get the car to turn over then worry about the gas though. _________________ 1981 924 NA

I'll clean off my grounds tonight, and i charged my battery. I don't want to get a new battery just yet, because i don't like investing another 100 dollars in a car that may not start. Timing is right at TDC, and the dizzy is withing 2 or 3 degrees. I have fuel flow, and i can hear the pump, so all those aspects are alright. Car has brand new oil in it, castrol 20w50. If the charged battery fails to turn it over fast enough w/ a jump, I'll try to push start it. I'll keep you all updated. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

Use a battery from another car. A dead (flat) battery can suck down so much power that it will keep even a jump start from turning the engine over. My '82 was like this when picked up. _________________ Vaughan Scott
