All the electricals to the guages quite fuel level, tach oil, temp, even the alt guage quite worken..car starts fine alts putting out I think Ill go have it checked..guages dont work they just stopped though the little guage lights turn on and the signal indicators light. Its like the movie gremlins when the gremlin chews through the cord to the clock so itll get fed after midnight and he notices the clock hands arnt worken and goes 'whats goin on here' while holding the clock and tracing the wire to its chewed off end.

Give me some ideas....

Ill have pics later today..of shift rod hole and 44 suspension.

nope
the alt only putting 12.7 volts and around 16amps...
should be more like 14 or 15 volts and around 75 to 90 amps

The onlt thing I did to the electricasl system lately is
hook up my tach the green wire that used to go to the stock coil
to the back of my msd to get the tach worken that was
yesterday it worked for awhile.
Now
all of a sudden the tach started jumping around itsd not accurate now and the electics to all the guages needles quite..
fuel,tach,oil.volts
those dont work atall..I just checked the alt.I looked at all the wires by pullen the guage cluster out there fine ..I also pulled the smaller 3 guage cluster out to check it ..its fine

What happend.

well first you said the alt is putting out if it is at 12.7 it is not putting out, it should be at 13.8-14 volts, have you ried disconnecting the tach wire and does it fix the problem

if this was at idle then it could be that the alt just wasn't turning fast enough

I checked the alt I just put in and at idle it was putting 13.46
volts back... The alt I took out the new one I just took it to a auto parts store where they know beans I think a girl tested the alt..though she said seemed the diodes were toast

Now I forgot to mention that when I first started the task of hooken up the tach yesterday I removed the guage cluster to check wires to the tach I couldnt remember if I hadem hooked up or not... AsI had my hand up there to screw in the speedo cable I moved wires out of the way...
I didnt move em back and when I connected the battery and hit the power swich it smoked the insulation on a wire, smoke was coming out the dash I shut the power off and it stopped though I took off the battery cable also. I pulled the cluster out and the wire that got smoked was one of the black ones that go to the tach and another wire got it too it was black also and goes to the round connector that connects to the guage that holds the battery light gas guage and turn signal indicator the guage on the far left.. I looked at the wires and wrapped em with electrical tape as the plastic was melted off just in spots..It worked the tach was worken fine...then all hell broke loose.. and the guages quite worken. I have no powered guages everything else works.

Im goin ou there and take out the dash and trace those melted wires down and fixem also Ill take a look at the wiring schematic in haynes..
and use my engine anylizer that measures volts and amps.

hmmm you know now I really wonder why they don't work

when you melt a wire ALWAYS replace the wire or it will give grief in the future

Ok got the cluster out and the dash just about ..any way on the big round hookup that hooks into the guage on the far left theres 2 wires melted there black and by looken at my haynes on page261 I see that connector lug 12 comes from the tach thats one and lug 7 thats the other goes to the ignition switch so ..the other tach wire goes to a continuation
current track its a double connection to the tach..If any one cares to share there views by means do so as long as its conductive to the
congruent task.

sounds like you probably just have another fried wire somewhere, or a wire not hooked up that you overlooked, or possibly a blown fuse... everything was working fine until you hooked up the tach and shorted the wires, right?.. I'm sure you'll figure it out...

Everything works in the guage on the far left, the tach doesnt, or the
volt guage, the oil guage either. Ill test for current with
my engine anylizer it does both amps and volts..all though Im just looken for volts and how many.

Didi a a test on voltmeter with 8 flashlight batterys works fine
checked the volts on the existing hookup fo voltguage in car only have 4.5
so there still a short some where.

Most sports cars use a switched source for voltguage I dont know what the 924 uses might be the tach any way they use the tach or the heater
I checked the heater source and its putting out 12 with just the power on with the car started it jumps to 14.sothis is gonna be the source for this surrent path..I think it should power volts,oil,tach...though I should try to source the short on the existing it might be in the engine compartment wireing as I ve been thru the interior pretty well Im thinking I should maybe take it out or go for the engine bay wiring..
