Tension must have been incorrect.

Too tight or not tight enough? The haynes manual said to tighten it until you could twist it 90 degrees....

so the tough guys have a more manly amount of tension on their belts.
It's a good indication though... but I thought it was too tight and gave it a little bit less.
Haven't had any problems with that.
So I guess yours was too tight. Too little tension would cause it to slip once, I guess... while too much tension wears it out really fast.

Agreed with rasta. Something bound it up or it was way too loose and started skipping teeth. Look on the bright side, it's not a 944, so line up the marks and put a new belt on, good to go. Well... and replace the tensioner if that's the issue.

A 944, and you'd be dead.

nope, isn't it nice? 2.0L N/A is a non-interference.

BTW, this can be tricky if you have any hand strength whatsoever. I can twist mine 90° with the tensioner adjusted to max, which results in the belt being MUCH too tight. The key is not to twist it as far as you can, rather just to twist it until you can feel the belt begin to stretch. Takes some concentration, but you'll get a feel for the "stretch point."

I agree with Rasta. I use twist method, which results in a belt that's WAY too tight. Then I back it off until it stops whining. Replace the tensioner every couple of years. They're cheap.

belts deteriorate over time.
I bought a belt once that lasted a week. Must have been real old stock.
The next one is still on there - bought elsewhere.

Only buy Gates belts.

Contitech belts are junk.
