Im looking to buy my first 924 now that i can get classic insurance and i cant decide which to get! I definately want either the S or Turbo, purely for the extra performance but im concerned about reliability.

Ive heard about other turbos that have had alot of problems if not treated correctly.. and i know the S is a more modern engine. But i was wondering what you all thought what the best choice is taking into account both power and reliability. Also does anyone have performance figures on a standard S and Turbo?

many thanks!!
Nick

I think the UK (european) 931 is like 170hp , not sure about the european 924S probably around the same or a little less.

924S in good condition will most likely be more reliable if in good condition and properly maintained.

Have you compared insurance? The 924S might be cheaper to insure without that big scary word "turbo".

All things being equal I'd go for the turbo. In the long run maintenance costs would probably be similar.

Yeah, Turboisize your self and if you can't find one in good condition goto the S. Both are fine cars.

Happy hunting.

Being that I have both a Euro 1979 931 and a 88 924S I would say go for the S. It is more modern and you will like the feel and ride better. The turbo was still crude in 79 although I like mine very much.

I'm not so sure how relevant the 0-60 times are now, all the spec's you see where written back in the 1970's/80's... I'm fairly sure my 1978 924 hits 60 in a fair bit less than 9.9 seconds (modern fuels, tyres, oils etc)...

saw a Carrera GT for sale (in the classifieds of the 911 & GT mag) @ 10k GBP which is a very good price if the car is in as good condition as stated.

I use mine every day but be prepared for the annoying things like the headlight switch breaking

having to disconnect the battery when arrive to work & get hm until the new switch arrives... luckily the lights were on when the switch broke so at least I can see where I'm going...

but you'll love that addictive push as the turbo kicks in, the GT really shifts! The overtaking ability this car has is superb

Ah, hang the expense, there's nothing like a Turbo!
