Howz that for a headline!? All you dudes sitting around out there with 931s in the driveway need to get the cobwebs out!
Our preliminary results convince us that the 931 is indeed going to be competitive in the series. We squeaked into the final round of the 944 Cup at Summit Point. Part of the annual 'Turkey Bowl'. On the first official outing 'LJ' and the little car got a Drivers Award for most places gained; from starting 12th up to 4th, backwards down the 'chute' to 8th and finished 6th. Track conditions were treacherous. Cold, wet, cold, wet, dark.
Apex (sponser) hosted a nice Turkey Dinner at the track for Cup participants on saturday evening. Awards were given out. Sunday yours truly sub'd for 'LJ' who had to report to the coal mine. All Sunday races were for fun and I do not know the finishing order. Believe approximately 4 of 6. But importantly the car seemed to be holding it's own as I got 'acclimated'. (I have not driven the car since March).
So long as we can run in cold 40 degree November air we should be up with the lead dogs. Doing the same thing in August will be the trick. Yes, the Turbo can be a handful in the wet, but obviously not impossible.
These results were on 16 inch wheels. Most of the hotshoes are running 15s. We were on Toyo RA1s, most on Hoosiers (maybe not that much of a advantage in the cold, but some). The pace to match on this track is about 1:27. We posted a 131.9 in practice. 5 sec is a lot but all times were slow this day.
The point is, your 931 can compete in this series and be competitive. What are you waiting for? It's a Porsche, Drive the damn thing! |

Awesome! Welcome to the club!
If I can ever figure out how to get one of the turbos running, I might consider building one up and joining you! _________________ Vaughan Scott

notice how racer use standard, there is a reason for that and congrates on running bet you had fun, are you allowed to ad an intercooler to the car in that series as that would help in the august runs _________________ 3 928s, |

Ahhhh, if only we could run an IC...
No, it's explicitly disallowed. So are automatics, in most sanctioning bodies... _________________ Vaughan Scott

The 937 is not eligible for the series. But the 931 is. For the most part the 931 must remain stock, although interior can be removed. The Brown 931 did do very well at Rd 6, and I fear it will be "too" competitive. Still pondering on how to regulate the the turbo so it employs no more then stock power.
Also on the 924 front, plan to drop the minimum weight to 2000 lbs for 2003 to bring it to the new series' power to weight ratio. This may require we allow DP or GT body parts, including aftermarket such as GT Racing, to get to that weight.

Vaughn:
According to the numbers, 2400 lbs is still too heavy for the 924 to be competitive. So then, the move to 2000lbs. Plus, the DP or GT look makes the model look alot more racey. Would think it would add to the fun of campaigning a 924 NA. Just tryin to give the 924 a home on the track. In fact, I'd like to put together a car like that.

Wanted to clarify the weight changes. The base weight we are working off of for the 944 ITS car will stay the same for next year, i.e. 2800 lbs. We are doing some fining tuning for the some of the other cars such as the PCA I car will go to 2750 lbs to help compensate a bit for the difference in allowed final drive ratios. So as you can see not much change is happening overall. However, the 924 is really the only car for which we are giving a big weight break for next year. Whether anyone can make that 924 weight I don't know, but it is there if they want it.

It will be extremely hard to make that weight, not impossible (maybe).
What do the rules allow for on the 2.0 liter are they able to go carbs? _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net

to get the car down to 2000lb would require ALOT of work, probably carbon fiber body parts as fiberglass is too heavy, carbon fiber torque tube, that torsion tube replacement piece from lindseyracing.com, no roll cage (adds to much weight), loose the nut behind the wheel (160lb) tubular chassis, and helium balloons attached of course _________________ 3 928s, |

between engine, torque tube trans and suspension your looking at 1200, I bet
and then the body striped is 650 add body panels, wheels, glass, seat , cage and driver, saftey and battery
You might be able to have a two gallon fuel cell and make a ton
I can pick up the front end of striped car, but the rear I can't lift so there is alot of weight in the back _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net

I believe the 924 D-Production car was only 1900 lbs. Looks like you'll need to strip everything out, and I mean everything. The Lodge Sports 924 Series requires 1000kg (approx 2200 lbs) minimum weight with driver. _________________ Jon Furst |
