Could it be a not-so-bled clutch, or something else? I haven't checked transmission fluid level yet.
All the other gears seem to work fine. It's just that the first one is not that much different from reverse - it's got a bit of synchro on it, but it's tricky to engage it without a grind. _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |

Probably not the clutch if you can get it into reverse, standing still, without a grind. You might try RedLine NS fluid for a band-aid but you'll probably end up repplacing the syncro anyway.

Ok, I'll do the fluid change then, it's not enough of a problem to make me drop a transmission in the middle of winter.
Long-term - should I get a rebuild kit for my transmission, or would another tranny be a better choice? Say, would a 951 unit with LSD work? Or is there a lot of extra work involved? _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |

Does the shifting feel loose/sloppy? I know a worn shift lever pin makes it difficult to get it into reverse, so maybe the same happens to 1st when it's really worn.. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

The audi box is cheap to repair. You might also try Castrol TAFX oil as it was supposedly made for this type of gearbox. I do in the supercharged car (944s2 box) and it has improved the change.
Cheers

The shifter is a bit loose, but not much - the bushing was gone, so I just replaced it with tape for time being. The lever is not touching the chassis, at least.
After driving it around for a bit, the shifter got a bit better. If you drop it to 2nd first, and then take it reaaaal easy going into 1st, it slides right in, with maybe just a "clank-clank". So there's still a synchro there, it's just that it's not so hot. _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |
