Does anyone know if a camshaft for the 2 litre VW engine is compatible with the 924 ? it being of VW/Audi origin ?

Could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure they're different mate, think the 924 camshaft is only used on the 924 hence the ludicrous pricetag on them new.

I'd be willing to bet the 924 uses a vw cam , since the 924 has a mechanical lifter , it would probably be a vw with mech lifters . see link to narrow down the posiibilities . but the only way to know for sure is to get 1 and see if it fits . maybe a breaker will sell you a worn 1 for cheap to test .

I've just had a look on eurocarparts.com, the two they list for the 924 under their own part numbers (305330010 and 305330011) show only for the 924 and the 924Turbo... Had a quick search online for the part number listed in the tech section here and I don't get any hits back for VW or Audi applications.

porsche did not custom design and cast an all new camshaft design for vw's new sports car (the 924 ) its an off the shelf part , we just havent identified which model they got it from , I'm thinking its from the 1.9 diesel , but no one has bought 1 to check , its just a matter of time before someone finds it .

Good point.. Surely in that case it will be from one of the 1.9 or 2.0 VW/Audi models from the mid 1970's then.. can't be that many can there?

considering that all the vw's from 1.5l-2.0l can interchange the head and crankshafts ,difference is the bore and stroke . says block/engine length is the same, the key points I think would be the cam specs lift duration, lobe seperation etc , and mechanical valves and the 924 head change in 77 so it could be the late 70's to early 80's cam design they used . according to the link i posted the 81-85 1588 cc Dasher, VW and Audi Types, Diesel, Mechanical Lifter, and 83-86 1780 cc VW and Audi Types, Mechanical Lifters are the possible donors . few want to spend the day at the breakers with a 924 cam in hand . some to all of these cams use a shim type lifter , whether or not that makes a difference I dont know , itcould be it doesnt matter what type of lifter is used , but from what I read those shim type lifter have a tendency to shoot the shims at high rpms , so maybe porsche just changed the lifters to avoid that problem and they just used a run of the mill $68 dasher cam ?.so the possibilities have been narrowed to 81-85 1.6l dasher or diesel , or 83-86 1.8 gas or diesel . I'm thinking its the diesel , its has the same conrods as the 924 ,porsche seems to like the heavier/durable parts . ok lets find a cheap source for both and see what happens .

I am pretty sure that it is an audi basedunit, the lobes on the VW are much narowwer (less surface area) and the tappets are smaller in diameter.

Thanks for the input, I'm now reliably informed by someone who works a lot on both engines that the VW and Audi cams are not interchangable, and so the VW cam won't fit

is the reason for asking that you have got a bust cam? quite a few porsche breakers over here if you have and the one's i've dealt with have been quite reasonably priced...

Van/Truck was tagged as the VW "LT", I've actually driven one too... sadly this was back in the early 1990's and it's no longer around for me to take a gander at the motor
