Hi All,

First I gotta say that I love this site - check it out every day. You guys have been a wealth of valuable info.

I know this is going to sound really dumb, but where are the fill and drain caps for the transmission?

I have an '80 924 with a 5 speed, non-snail shell transmission (16/9 - shift pattern 1-2-3-4-5-R).

I thought they were in the back near the rear axle - but I can't see the caps - at least not very easily. The repair manual shows a nifty little picture of a pristine shiny cap (my underbody is all gunky) but doesn't give a clear idea of where it is in relation to everything.

Also, I was planning to change the fluid to synthetic. Any recommendations for a type of fluid to use?

I changed the oil to Mobil 1 synthetic 15w-50. By the way, now would be a good time to tell me that synthetics will lead to blowing the head and tranny, cause a disturbance in the Force and will lead to an increase in juvenile delinquency, jay walking and other generally bad stuff. However, I get the feeling that synths have been ok'd by Porsche now.

thanks,
Kev

I've run Mobil1 in my engine for a while, love it, plan on continuing to run it this season (at least till I can afford to use Redline!)

Mobil1 gear lube is very good; I'm actually about to fill my snailshell up with Redline gear lube; not MTL, as it's got unwanted friction modifiers, but as I recall it's the 75W90 rated gear lube. Check them out, send an email if you are unsure what to use. I got a response back from a guy who had previously owned a 924!

Very cool guys...

Vaugahn
