I have an '81 that upon warming up, (about 15mins running) starts to drop the oil pressure and idle. After about 25mins the pressure tops out at about 2kp-cm3 no matter how high I rev it, this also happens if I park for less than an hour and try to restart it. I've been told that this "just happens to Porsches of that vintage", but I cannot believe that there isn't a way to fix it.

Thank you,
Eric

Other than the usual tests to be sure that the oil sending unit and guage is working correctly, and that the oil dispersion tube hasn't snapped in two or the plastic elbow hasn't split, the most significant cause of low oil presure in 924 is the cam journals, if the oil isn't frequently changed in dirty conditions, the journals will prematurely wear out. I say prematurely coz eventually the head is going to wear out on the cam journals. The head has a bad design in that the journals do not have replaceable bearing shells similar to the crank and rods journals. On a overhead cam engine like the 924, where oil quality and flow are important to the lubrication and cooling of the head, the journal tolerances will slowly increase allowing for more oil flow but at a certain point the flow is too much. I have seen this plague other cars like Honda.

Pull your cam cover and inspect the tube, you might even pull the coil wire or fuel pump relay and give the engine a few seconds of cranking to build up presure (the engine should be warmed to operating temp) to see if you have developed any problems with the tube.

If it is the cam journal, then you have three options. Buy a new head, mill the caps and maybe line bore the journals, or (and this is my favorite but I don't think any body has tried it), bore out the journals and install replaceable bearings of the correct size. The casting on the head is pretty pourous and welding can develop alot of problems with warpage, so I don't think welding up the journals and reboring would work.
