Hey guys got a restoration going on right now and I'm in the process of trying to finish the interior. The dash is in the process of getting flocked and I chose black as I had a good center unit in black and I didnt think the brown option would match or look good. With this choice I have to make the rest of the interior black too. Instead of buying all new black door cards and back fender portion, could I just dye them? Has anyone tried dying the leather in these cars and how did it turn out? Im planning all black carpets and trim with tan seats. Maybe if the dye turns out GOOD, I do the seats? Would be likely to kill myself if i ruin a perfectly good set of seats dying them tho. Any advice helps, cheers.

I spray painted my doorpanels and side panels which were brown, to black. Main thing is to really, really, really degrease it properly before doing it and applying the paint in thin layers.

So far it's holding up well and I'm happy with it.

What type of spray did you use? I plan on cleaning them pretty thoroughly with some leather safe type of cleaner.

I've used VHT vinyl dye on some interior parts (turned my 560SEC into a two-tone interior). https://www.vhtpaint.com/specialty/vht-vinyl-dye It worked pretty well and has mostly held up; my only complaint would be it doesn't take a lot to scratch it. It says it'll work on "untreated leather." I'm not sure exactly what that means, but then I'm pretty sure the door cards and such would actually be vinyl. I haven't done anything with carpet, but I suspect taking it out and using fabric dye would b more permanent. The VHT stuff mentions carpet, but my bet is it wouldn't look as good or hold up nearly as well as fabric dye.

I'm from europe/the Netherlands, over here the Motip stuff is pretty easy to get a hold of, so I bought a couple of spray cans of vinyl paint and used those. 2 were enough for the door panels and rear panels.

You don't have leather seats/interior with 99.9% certainty, hardly any 924 has. You don't dye vinyl or most leather for that matter either, you paint it.
There are special products for doing this, cleaning , scuffing, cleaning as with most type of painting.
I've seen it done by professionals with mixed results. There is great chance of it looking like shit in a short time on surfaces with wear.

Well I guess we'll find out. The tan even in good condition looks like dog shit IMO so not much to lose here honestly. Seats I will probably leave alone as they would most likely have to be disassembled to paint them correctly. Rear quarter panels and door cards will probably see about as much wear as the rear seats, AKA basically none. Thanks for all the advice boys, will make sure to link the video of how it all turned out when I'm done. Last question is about the headliner and if anyone's tackled one before? If so with what material and glue, cheers boys

Funny, I'm in similar boast with my 931. But I'll just be paying pros, I think.

Headliner became junk when trying to switch over to black interior, but it's s simple enough piece of flat vinyl they should have little trouble to replace it.

The seats, mine were actually swapped out before I got the car, it's got early 80's 911 Sport seats - but in brown. So right now I'm looking at having them completely recovered in black vinyl. Don't think I can handle the upkeep required for leather, TBH; this is a runner/daily, not a museum car, and it's never parked inside, sadly.

I will be stopping by an upholstery shop to get a quote on getting my Sebrings seats and door cards redone along with the headliner on my 77 and some vinyl wrap stuff like the pillars where the up seat belt loop bolts into. IF they will give me a break on price due the volume of work I might consider having them do my entire interior including a dash recover. That being said I see myself flocking the dash and painting the vinyl black and dying or painting the carpet. Headliner and vinyl work I will leave for the shop.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did that run you after shipping?
