My car 1980 Turbo won't currently start with the key. The previous owner (who sold me the car) temporarily solved this by bypassing the fuel pump relay with a manual switch and would trigger the starter solenoid by using a jumper wire from the battery to the T3 connection in the engine bay to get the car running. He also swapped the ignition switch, and discovered that the switch is good and not the problem starting the car.

After spending the day investigating, I have discovered that the wiring harness around the fuse panel has been butchered in several places by a previous owner... Among other things:

1) the red/black wiring from A10 that runs out to the starter has been cut and then poorly soldered back together in a rather ugly looking splice.

2) same thing with the black wire from C15 that runs to the fuel pump relay

3) pin 31 on the fuel pump relay is not connected to anything at all (not even a dangling wire).

4) There is evidence that one of the battery feeds to H was once tapped (also soldered), but this was removed at some point, and the hard solder point is now just wrapped in electrical tape.

I cleaned up the ground points behind the fuse panel and tightened the spade connectors before putting them back on.

I'm going to re-splice the A10 red/black wire with crimped butt connectors, which will hopefully help with the starter issue.

Questions:

1) Where should pin 31 on the fuel pump relay go? The wire broke off inside the relay socket, so I can't tell by looking at it. Is this supposed to go to a brown wire and and ground behind the fuse panel with the various other grounds? Or does it go somewhere else? It looks like the wire broke off from the connector inside the relay socket...

2) Other than dealing with the crappy solder splices, are there other points in the electrical path between the ignition switch and the T3 connector that I should look for?

Any ideas here would be mighty appreciated!

Gord

Hi Gord,

on my (S2) 1981 turbo, the fuel pump relay grouds via the overboost switch. It's a brown with white trace wire which is routed via the 9-pole switch in the engine bay, and on to the switch in the manifold.

I have a 1980 wiring diagram for you if you're interested. Unfortunately, although it says for n/a and turbo, I do not see the overboost switch in it. On the n/a, the FPR grounds on the ground crown behind the fuse box, and that is all the wiring diagram says.

It should, however, help with restoring the ignition switch wiring to stock.

Shoot me a pm with your email adress and I'll send you the wiring diagram.

Cheers,

Eliza
