I am about to do a drum brake replacement including new backing plate and new hardware. I am getting tripped up on this axle seal “lid”.

I saw in the PET exploded view that a seal goes inside it. So I am trying to remove the green seal and put in this SKF replacement I bought.

I am having a really hard time getting this seal out though. It has a VW/Audi logo on it, I assumed it was original and long overdue for a replacement. I scraped off all the green material and exposed the metal ring. I am chewing it up and making no progress on removing it.

Am I on the right track? Did I screw up and need to buy a new one with the original seal still intact?

You are doing okay. The seal is really rusted in. Soak it in some lubricating fluid overnight and then try some heat on the perimeter of the "lid". Eventually, the remains of the seal will come out.

Thank you Fifty50Plus! I soaked in PB Blaster yesterday and will try again today with the help of some propane.
