Neither my wipers nor my fresh air blower are working in my '80 931 I'd appreciate any tips anyone can give.

i'm an electrical guy and usually these things are pretty easy, but German wiring has me beat. All fuses good.

Pretty sure wiper motor is good, will try 12v direct to wiper motor tomorrow to verify its condition. Fan motor may be dead but would like to test it w/o removing dash.

Problem is cannot access fan control on console - yes I have the gauges/A-C control out, and read that I have to pull whole dash & speaker out to get to the fan motor. Tried access from engine bay, no go. A/C blower BTW works fine.

Doubt wiper switch is bad, but will try to access its wiring tomorrow too.

Any tips are appreciated - any known points of weakness or problems?

Right now I'm thinking fan problem may be in switch in slide control on console - but how do you get that out?

And doubting wiper switch is bad - car only has 58k miles on it.

TIA,

GN

Half good news. Fan motor was just stuck after sitting for 17 years. Took force just to manually turn the blade.

But the more I turned it, the freeer it got, and eventually spun with no resistance.

Now working at all 3 speeds perfectly.

Now, for windshield wiper motor - it is not getting voltage from the switch......fuse is good.......

Yeah, the wiper switch seems to be a little bit of a pain; if you're good with patience and working on small fiddly little bits, taking it apart and cleaning contacts and grease can work wonders. I was having a real pain with my wipers always working intermittently, even in the off position, final solution to that was a full disassembly and cleaning of the switch and contacts.

Vaughn -

Thank you so much. I was hoping that wasn't necessary, but rebuilding electrical switches/devices is probably my greatest ability.

I just didn't want to go to all the trouble of removing it.

But if it is known to be a frequent failure point, I'll do that.

First just wish I could access the wiring to test it and verify that it is switch that is failing. As switch has 3 settings (intermittent, low, high), it is unusual that all 3 would fail unless it is the feed point itself.

Do you know where connector E is? E7, E 15, E16, E18, E20 & E21 (6 pins) are in connector E. If I can get to it, I can test the switch w/o pulling it. I suspect it is under dash connecting switch to wiring harness.

As always, your help is greatly appreciated.

Detailed bench work like rebuilding switches is something I really enjoy and am good at.

Removing switches from difficult to reach places is not.

Are you referring to the plug into the back of the switch?

Naw, just dive into it, not that hard once the wheel's off.
