1977 Porsche 924 NA
First time starting new engine. New starter, All new 2gauge wire.

Getting a very loud click when starting. one loud click. All connections are very clean. battery is good. engine turns freely, even have plugs out. I could use some help diagnosing this problem.

Would this be a solenoid issue? it is new but there's always duds here and there

could it be that the starter isn't aligned properly? to the flywheel? (first time doing any of this, so im not sure if thats even a problem you can have, just sounds like starter is hitting something)

did 924 NA's ever change the flywheel? or have different starters?. The new engine I have I am not sure exactly what year it came out of so maybe that is an issue?

I have big positive, big negative and then the wire to starter. looks like there is another connection on the starter, What is the purpose of the other small connection?

small weird bit of information, after i try to start and get the click, ill go over and turn the engine manually and hear a small little click when i first start to spin it, then never again until i try to start it again.

If you need anymore information let me know! Love learning cars on this car it is a great beginner project.

Is your battery dead?

Which small terminal on the solenoid have you connected the small wire from the ignition switch?

If it's correct, I suggest you pull the starter and bench test it.

tried 2 batters. both new this year and 100% charged. still a click. I have the starter wire connected to the terminal on the top of the starter (relative to the ground when installed)

It almost sounds like your starter is not engaging correctly and getting stuck on the click. WHen you go to turn motor, you release the stuck gear and it pops back? Just based on how you describe it

I would loosen the screws, giggle the starter, and tighten again. In general I would just be looking at how its mounted just based on how you described your issue
