Hello, first time poster here. About 2 years ago for a 21st birthday gift, i got given a non-running 1981 924 luxe auto, which I've been very slowly chipping away at.
Lets just say i'm a real novice when it comes to it, but learning as i go. It's fun!

Anyway long story short I finally got the old girl running! after 5 years I got it going. Miracle! don't ask me how I did.

It idles like magic. Smooth just as it should when in gear (D,1,2 & rev).
But in neutral and park it has the unbearable squeal the seems to be coming from the alternator belt (see video of the sound here https://youtu.be/uSgoMbhXE_c)

Now my hunch is that if you look at the picture below, the alignment of the alternator belt has something to do with it.

I can't seem to find a correct/recommended answer on how to fix this. Any ideas?

(Also if you think the squealing noise might be something else yell out)

On my car, that plate you have installed as a spacer between the pulley and the pump is in fact on the other side of the pulley, looking more like a washer...

Then again, looking at the PET it looks like it would indeed be installed as a spacer, but with the pulley flipped the other way...

Maybe time to experiment?

I thought I knew the answer but on second thought your car is RHD and IIRC that is rather different from my LHD:
Your Alternator is sticking out a few centimeters more forward.
Use a UK PET catalog to check the right construction setup.

If the alternator bushes are not fubar then time to play with the water pump pulley alignment

Oooh, I didn't realize there might be a difference LHD/RHD... mine of course are LHD...

cant see in the photo but does the water pump pulley line up with the crank pulley?
It looks like one spacer too many behind it.
If the water pump lines up with the crank then check the alternator mounts. there is adjustment to move fwd.

Thanks for the advise, the crank pulley and the water pump alignment was only 1-2mm out so that was fine.

I ended up removing the alternator (thought i might as well check out the wiring back there). Turned out the rubber bushings was pushed through and were in pretty bad nic.

Put everything back with a spacer washer in the alternator bracket. Everything aligns up perfectly! Just waiting on a new bushing to arrive.

Plus the insane squealing has stopped! WIN!
