My 83 n/a restoration was going well until a couple of days ago. The car had been sat outside in Scotland for three years before we transported it to France. Whilst a bit rough it did run when we first got it.

After replacing the fuel filter I wanted to move onto oil and filter change. Tried to start the engine but it wouldn't catch. The new battery started to drain so I attached jump leads to my P38 Range Rover. After a few more attempts the starter motor wouldn't crank at all. Removed battery and charged over night. Following day tried again to start but again nothing from starter motor. I then noticed battery gauge indicator dropping like a stone. I have tried two fully charged batteries and the same symptoms....immediate battery drain and no cranking of the starter.

Research has thrown up a lot of possible causes. Ignition switch and starter motor solenoid seem high on a lot of people's lists.

Any ideas what might be causing the battery drain? What are the first things to check? I am utter novice so whilst grateful for any advice the simpler the better for me

Any way of fixing it or do I bite the bullet and buy a new starter motor. Whilst on that subject there appears to be a few starters available but the price range is enourmous ranging from less than £50 to well over £200. Other than cost what's the difference?
