The Ghost (87 924S) began stumbling under throttle a few weeks back. Ignition system checked out ok, no vacuum leaks found, compression good, fuel pressure was fine and responded properly when blipping the throttle. O2 sensor indicated rich mixture while stumbling.

Yep!
I almost ruled it out when the pressures reacted properly and a vacuum check of the diaphragm resulted in it holding vacuum with the engine off.
With engine running however fuel dribbled out of the vacuum port! _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Nice, something to look out for next time I'm troubleshooting. There were a few things that I was thinking could also cause that, and I almost ruled the FPR out since you had checked the fuel pressure, but it was the only thing that fit...
That said, we could play a long game of this with all the things I've come across in the shop.
I once had a guy tell me his 924S was overheating. When we started it up, it didn't take long before the gauge was heading into the red and it was puking coolant everywhere. There was no white smoke in the exhaust and the engine passed a compression test.

Yup, looks like the belt was too tight which bent the shaft, embedding the impeller into the waterpump. I would've thought I'd heard the belt squealing or some other signs, so it stumped the hell out of me... _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

Ooohh, BMW impellers as well as Dodge Intrepids (plastic) would swell/shrink
and slip (not keyed or pegged) when hot and cause the same condition in traffic but not the open road. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car H-Prod SCCA
