After several days of working, O finally got the crankshaft bolt off my 924 2liter (1981). I tried several methods, including an air impact wrench that would not work. Finally resorted to making a tool that bolted to the cam belt pulley (6 holes) and using an impact 24mm socket with about a 4 foot leverage bar (ie-pipe over breaker bar). With about all the strength I could muster I finally loosened the bolt. Which brings me to my question. The Haynes book says the torque spec on this bolt is 180 ft-lbs. Does it really need to be that tight? Your experienced based comments are welcomed. Thanks, Ted

180 isn't that tight...it wasn't torque that made it hard to remove.

Thanks for the comment. What do you think made it that tight? I have seen and heard forum comments that the crankshaft bolt is often very tight. Other engines I have rebuilt are on the order of a 100 ft-lbs or so.

Seizing through corrosion and/or dissimilar metal bonding.

To hit 180 you only have to pull 90 lbs on a two foot breaker. Like I said, not that tight.

The 2.0L motor is known to have some ridiculous levels of vibration, is probably why...

I go with 180ft-lbs plus red loctite.
