On my '81 I would like to hard wire the fuel pump with a manual switch but I see in the workshop manual that the AAV and something else are dependant on it for power. What do I need to re-wire in order to not have to use a fuel pump relay but instead just have it on a dash switch ? This '81 seems to have more shit spider webbed into other things it's a bit confusing and honestly not needed...

Oh, I also deleted the A/C, hope that doesn't affect it ...

thanks fellas,

Me

The fuse block is after the DME, so you just need to drop it and energize the top of the fuel pump fuse. . .plug and play via spade connector.

Doesn't bypassing the relay eliminate the safety feature of not having the fuel pump running when the engine isn't?

I'll tell you what's not safe, the undersized wire they used to power the pumps. I have torn 10 or 15 of these cars apart and NOT ONE didn't have massive heat damage and melted insulation on the wiring for the fuel pump circuit. How more cars don't have electrical fires I don't know. It's quite obvious this is a fault of the factory and I plan to fix it while I have the whole mess out and accessible. I plan to up the wire size to 10 gauge and solder on new connectors.

Under your drivers side door sill runs the fuel pump power wire all the way to the FP.. If you cut that wire there all of the other FP powered accesories, like the lambda, will still get power.. Think it is black and green and a bit fatter than the others..
I have a 3 way switch there for OEM/off/+12v.. And a FP +12v switch under my hood to there..

.......

To bulletproof my FP power..
What I did is I have my battery in the right rear wheel well. So I ran my fuel pump power wire heavy right from the battery to a relay and from the relay right to the fuel pump..

Grounded the other side of the relay to the battery and used the original fuel pump power (blk/grn) wire only to energize my relay..

OEM FP power - relay - ground
Battery + - relay - FP

So it takes all the draw off my OEM FP relay circuit and places it right on the battery. The OEM FP power wire runs right under your back hatch carpet there right behind the rear seat..

Actually I used 2 relays in parallel to make it double beefy..

Works good..

Sorry, professor, I was referring to the fuel pump relay.

Well I fixed it. In order to keep the same relay and fuse locations I took the rear defrost wires from 2 other harnesses that were in mint shape and used them to replace the 12 gauge factory FP wiring. This gave me the special c4imp ends from the secondary fuse panel so it is all good. Now every single wire in the cirquit is good 10 gauge and has cleaned and soldered connectors.
