I changed the timing belt tensioner on my 82 924 NA and while putting the new one in and trying to take up the slack the pulleys moved.

No big deal I thought, I lined up the notch on the lower pulley with the pointer and did the same with the upper pulley (the notch not the dot). I took the number one plug out to make sure it was TDC which it was but that spark plug is not as wet as I would have thought with all of the cranking.

What could have changed so much?

Before this the car would fire up within 2 seconds and run smooth but now I can't get the car car to even catch, it just turns over.

I have checked a couple times to make sure the pulleys are still lined up which they are. I have advanced and retarded the distributor after I marked the original position with no luck. Once I have a helper tomorrow I can have them crank the engine over so I will be able to adjust while cranking.

Any suggestions in the meantime, this has me baffled.

No specific solutions, just general car advice, soundso like you got your cam/valve timing right or in the ballpark, so it should catch and run. Could you have disturbed anything else when you worked on the car, I know the ignition wiring isn't up near the timing belt, but could you have knocked a wire loose ore something?

Nothing that I can think of, it was pretty cut and dry or so I thought. Hopefully I will have better luck tomorrow when my eyes and thoughts are fresh and I have a helper. Thanks for the reply

Like Glemon mentioned, I would be wanting to check that I had spark.

Read these posts (some are turbo versions):

From reading posts, it seems as though there can be confusion on the cam timing mark. It doesn't sound like you had anything far enough off from the original location to get things confused, but it's good to verify. If everything is correct with cam and crank marks, you should see the mark on the flywheel too. When I pulled/installed my distributor, I made sure the 3 marks lined up and the rotor in the distributor pointed to plug wire #1.

Ok so I have done some testing and here is what I found:

I didn't have spark so I cleaned the terminal (black/blue wire from fuse box) on the coil, now have spark but still wouldn't start.

I pulled, cleaned and tested the injectors. The spray pattern is good as they should be because they are only 200 miles old. I also did a quantitative fuel test and all injectors are putting out same amount. So I have fuel to the plugs, spark but still won't start.

I had a helper crank the engine while I rotated the distributor back and forth and it won't even try to catch. ??? I pulled just the number 1 plug and it was wet with fuel after cranking.

I performed a compression test on each cylinder and these numbers seem to be the same when I last performed it 2 years ago but maybe only 30 miles in those 2 years. (This car does not see the road as much as I would like it to) #1 = 85psi, #2 = 90psi, #3 = 105psi, #4 = 80 psi. Are these numbers too low?

What I still don't understand is what could have changed so much when the pulley slipped that would cause a car that started right up, rev and run smooth not even to catch now???

This has definitely got me stumped, again any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I also loosened the banjo bolt on the cold start injector and fuel did come out of there also.

Pull a plug wire and stick a fresh plug in it. Ground the plug to the engine with someone cranking the engine. If you see spark, replace all four wet plugs and it should start.

If it was running fine before you started work on the timing belt, then it is something you've done since.

What I would do is this: Turn it over until you get the timing marks on the crank and the cam pulley aligned. Are you sure you have the right marks?

If you look over on the flywheel (from the top) verify that the mark is there and lined up. Now pull the dist. cap. The rotor should point to number 1 plug wire. If any of these are not right...then you're starting to see your problem.

You have to carefully backtrack and figure it out what went wrong-without making things worse. I assume you have a haynes manual.

Thanks for the reply, during my compression test I dried the plugs with compressed air and used a spark tester to see that they were definitely getting good spark.

Butttt on another note, after searching for more solutions online for about a half hour I went back into the garage. I could of swore I saw a hairy gremlin running out of the garage so I tried starting it and bam!, started right up. Go figure. Now this is the worst type of problem because I have no idea why it would start now.

Anyway glad it is running but I would like suggestions on exhaust gas analyzers. What do you think about the Gunson digital? I am just a DIYer so I don't need a commercial unit but something that will do the job.

Brian,

Strange as can be it's running without doing anything new except the tests. I'm not sure what had changed but it's running.

I painted the marks on the pulleys so they are easily identified.
Thanks for the help

That's great news! Now take it to a cruise night somewhere! I know down in Westbrook they used to have a cruise night every Wednesday.

Definitely need a cruise night at least to burn some carbon out of the system. Have to look into the Westbrook scene.

Thanks again

I don't live in CT now, but when I did, I only recall seeing one 924. It was 7-8 years ago in Old Saybrook. It was red and needed work (don't they all?).

You must get alot of attention! Have you seen many?

They are a rare breed around here. I did see an 87 924 S at Lowes in Lisbon a couple weeks ago. Chatted with the guy a little bit and he hasn't seen any around either. The last one I saw before that had to be a few years ago.

I can't even find junkers to pick apart. Luckily when I acquired the car about 13 years ago I called around to all the yards so I can pick through what was left. Ended up getting quite a few good pieces for the interior and exterior.

I guess we the owners have to be a rare breed also, you need time, patience, money and 924.org to own one of these.

Agreed! Mine has been in the garage for the past 2 1/2 years. I am really excited about finally getting it on the road. Later this month or next month.

I've seen a couple 944's on the road but so far only one 924 on the highway. So it should be fun.
