|
|
I'm attempting to rewire the dual radiator fans in the car I'm restoring, however, they absolutely destroyed the cooling fan wiring in some hillbilly induced rage.
Does anyone know how to wire it properly? I had a look at my other car, but it's still in the beautiful hard rubber sheathing. I refuse to cut into that.
My manual only shows the single fan wiring diagram, which is somewhat useless on the two fan system. No useful information after searching online. He cut it off a few inches from the harness The passenger side fan wiring is generally intact (the brown is disconnected near the harness). The drivers side fan wires and wires leading up to the thermoswitch are missing entirely. From the wiring diagram for a single fan unit, it looks like I'm missing both of the 'scotch clips' or double wiring clip connectors that should be on each fan wire near the harness; considering there are 3 wires to each fan unit, which have two connecting pins.
I looked at my other car and sketched it out hoping to sort it out. Lines represent wires that a present currently on the restoration vehicle. Can anyone complete the diagram? How/where to connect the brown wires together and how they specifically link to the thermoswitch is throwing me off the most - figured it was best to check here as I'm sure someone has sorted it out in the past.

Doesn't your car have a resistor for each fan (one mounted under the dash and one mounted near the top of the radiator)? _________________ 78 924 |

Ok here is what is on my '78. I have factory air so things may be a little different.
blue/brown stripe wire to one side of thermostat, 2 wires (unknown color) to other side
blue and red to one fan
blue/brown stripe and brown to the other fan
another view of the connectors leading to the resistor. When I get time, I am going to clean up the wiring and get rid of those scotch things and wire nuts.
This is the resistor I was talking about.
Edit again:
You should have a resistor in there and from what I can tell, only two wires going to each fan. _________________ 78 924 |

No resistor floating around in there near the radiator that I know of. The only resistor I know of is mounted high behind the dash (adjacent to the right most gauge pod), it's plugged back in, so I assume the system is complete to the harness if that is associated with the fan units. AC is system is gone in both vehicles.
My 79.5 and 80 both have 3 wires coming off each fan, I would assume one is hot and the other pin is -/g. The 79.5's system works flawlessly during operation and to cool the car down after shutdown. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924

I think I found your answer. I went looking thru my factory manual and found an addendum covering the 79 a/c!
It's just one page, so I took an overall photo, then close-ups of each section.

The third wire is a ground wire that ties the two motors together. _________________ 78 924 |

Cheers for the replies!
Pardon the delayed response. I've been downed with a lung infection for the past few weeks; some lovely virus here in the Midwest.
brian19600: The images really help! Totally missing from my papers here across 3 different books! Lucky to have a shop manual! I figured the motors had to be tied together with the ground, and that was one link to the thermoswitch.
I'll have a go at wiring it up in accordance with those images and let you know how it turns out! _________________ 1979 Porsche 924

Drugged for the last week or so!
Finally feeling up to rewiring this thing! Will let you know the moment it's sorted! _________________ 1979 Porsche 924

I rewired the fan units as per the images above.
Seems to have sorted it out!
Cheers again for posting those!
I also finally found the A/C resistor hanging near the fuse box in the cabin. I unplugged it to stop the A/C fan from running when the car is off and not keyed. We did an A/C delete during the restoration.
There's a black and yellow and a brown wire that comes out near the fan wiring at the harness. They're chopped off. I'm assuming they were previously for the A/C... _________________ 1979 Porsche 924
