Can anyone identify this sheetmetal? It came in a box with the car. I'm hoping one is the heatshield for the starter.

| All of them look like parts of starter heat shield. Can't say for 100% since it's been a while since i took that apart and mine were super rusted, but it had something like 3 parts that looked just like those. |

Yes, JjyKs is correct it looks like the piece from the passenger side of the heat shield assembly. They start at the bottom of the firewall and tuck under the car along the torque tube tunnel.

Great thank you guys!
The big piece (pic 3)will fit in the area of the torque tube going toward the starter. The small piece (pic 2) seems to connect to it, not sure of orientation though. Anybody going under their car that can take a cell phone pic of the starter area? _________________ 78 924 |

Ok, 2 of the 3 shields are on.
I can't figure out the placement of the last shield. Anyone?

I have my engine out with the starter and heat shield in place. Tomorrow, if I think about it I will take some pics for you... Or.... Something I learned about here on the board....check the parts catalog in pdf form. It has exploded parts diagrams that have helped me a lot already. Available here http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/genuineparts/originalpartscatalogue/ _________________ Best I can with what I got.

If I remember correctly, the piece you have left wraps around the side of the starter (side away from the block) from the bottom and I think may attach to the block (or the floor pan) above the starter (just a guess as I wasn't looking at it for detail). I saw it when I was doing my alternator swap, and it is contoured to the starter. Essentially my starter is completely enclosed so that I can't really see any of it from under the car. I will be going back under at some point as I have to install my new AC/Heat system which means I will have to drop the engine splash guard again. Not sure as to when I will get the chance and the motivation as it is going to be a long hot day of frustration. If you still need pics when I go under I will get you some. _________________ Always be yourself, unless you can be Cthulhu, then always be Cthulhu. |

Ok, thanks sensei and cjpurifoy924.
I found the 2 covers in the parts drawing but I couldn't find the third one, until I looked under electrical just now. It is shown with the starter!
I will go under the car later today and tinker with it now that I have a description of where about it is supposed to go.
Thanks again! _________________ 78 924 |

Hey Brian. Sorry for the delay but I did snap some pics. I finally got a day to work on the cars without those pesky full time and side jobs bothering me. It seems mine may have been modified or chopped up a little. I hope you can make heads and tails of the pics.
Top as viewed from front of engine...
Top as viewed from side... I know it's hard to make out with the header and motor mount in the way.
Bottom as viewed from front...
Bottom as viewed from rear...
Mine appears to have some nuts and bolts missing, kind of like me. I guess this car was meant to be mine. Such as the nut on the mounting bracket and the bolt to the motor mount. View from underneath....
I hope this helps. Take care. _________________ Best I can with what I got.

Great thank you so much! That really helps. I'm missing the bracket(figures) so I had to order one. _________________ 78 924 |

Done! what a pain that was. The photos really helped-although your setup is little different (and looks much easier to put on). There is one bolt on the starter heat shield they expect you to put in that is angled toward the starter, so even a 1/4" drive socket and extension can't be used-and you can't get a hand in there because of the shape of the cover. After an hour, I ended up using a smaller diameter nut and bolt.
I finally realized why the previous owner removed the exhaust pipe and snapped most of the studs. He was changing the starter! _________________ 78 924 |
