|

Hi all,
The hinges on my hatch are anything but smooth, I do think that contributes a lot to bending of the hatch frame and the dreaded delamination.
Lubricating doesn't seem to do much - I suppose I'll have to change the pins and bushings.
HOWEVER - I have no idea how to safely extract those pins without destroying the hatch. Anyone here attempted this (successfully, if at all possible ) and can point me in the right direction?
Thanks awfully for your help!
Cheers,

i think you need a manual press of some sort...i have a rare spoilerless and wiperless hatch that i have to replace the pins so it does not gets destroyed and its not an easy job...surely a custom press is needed.
If i have the time later this summer i'll make one. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

I have replaced them by drilling out the screws (999 219 011 07) which hold the block (944 512 033 01 and 944 512 034 01) where the pens (477 827 527) are in.
Then you can reuse that block and tap new screwtire (schroefdraad) in the hatch itself.
Because you have the blocks the seperated from the hatch you can use all the force you have to get the pens out of it.
This means that you only have to replace the pins and the screws which holds the block
Cheap job, and it took me and a friend less then 2 hours if I remember correctly.
We took the complete hatch from the car and put it on the floor (on a blanket), so you're in a comfortable position to drill the screws out.
Shit: now I reread your openingspost, I see you're talking about the pins at the top of the hatch, and not the lower once...
But maybe the same approach with drilling out the screw could be used _________________ 911SC - 1980 |

Hi Gerben,
'fraid not... the hinges are not bolted to the hatch frame but welded. I think Morghen is right - what I need is a tool to press the pins out.
I had a brilliant idea yesterday, thinking of my bike chain riveting tool - only that thing is a tad too short to fit over the width of the hinge assembly. Bummer.
Anyway, I'll try to find a more suitable tool and in the meantime, use penetrating oil on the hinges frequently to try and free the pins as much as possible.
I'm not sure really but I feel that the reason for the hatch delaminating may well be the binding hinges much more that either slamming the hatch shut or the strength of the hatch shocks pulling the glass away from the frame. I had hoped that someone else had been down that road before me...
If anyone else cares to chime in, you're welcome!
I'll let you know how I get on.

Briliant indeed but as you said, too small...what you need is a motorbike chain riveting tool _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits
