Hi guys..

I have a 911, but my daily driver is a BMW 318ti automatic...I commute about 50mi a day..so cal freeways. The BMW is slow boring and reliable

I'd like to replace it with a 924 ..any words of wisdom for someone looking to daily drive a 924? I prefer the earlier engine (not 924s) for simplicities sake. I do all my own wrenching if that matters.

This one has my eye and I'm going to check it out (it now has stock wheels..boo! I like the gold ones!)

So..am I nuts? Should I look to a 944? any words of wisdom would be great..thanks!

The 924 might not be boring, but the slow part isn't going to be fixed by a 924. I just bought my first, a 78 NA as well. I love it, but "quick" it is not. I paid half of that guy's asking price with 58K miles. Good luck with your decision, I'm happy with my car, where it lacks in speed, it makes up in handling on the country roads.

I drive my 924 to work daily while nice weather...well some weeks i go back to my Passat as i need the quiet and the mellow slow feel.
I have two 924 turbos, one completely original and a GTS wannabe modified car, i daily the original one and the GTS i only drive on long trips and even tho it sits in a garage 90% of the time its still reliable to get me trough driving trips of up to 5000kms.

By all means, properly sort out the 924 and enjoy it.
The 924s available locally to you are very slow due to emmisions legislation but i think you can get away with modifying it to even european 125hp spec which on a 1150kg car is not slow in real life and on real roads.

But before you can rely on your 924 on a daily basis you have to invest some in it as it most likely was ignored for all its years.
You need to sort out the complete fuel system so you dont get cold start problems or hot start problems. Then its down to the actual car you're buying to sort out its things.

There is a guy in Canada who recently bought a 924 that looked very nice but turned out to be a rotten apple but he kept going and unless i'm mistaken he started daily driving it to work and he is still doing it as he irons out the wrongs done by the previous owners.

Here is his topic

Curious, I'm looking for info on this topic, what are the steps to bring the NA up to Euro specs?

Thanks for the replies! Speed isn't really what I'm after ( I have the 911 for that!) Just a reliable, economical fun to drive car.

after all, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow, right? haha

Good idea...I had a '96 with an S52 and the original 318ti automatic and it was a quick, fun little car as it also had quite a few chassis mods and M3 brakes, etc. I sold that car last summer but as you can see from my sig I still have a '95 318i with a 5 speed that has simply been the best, most reliable car I have ever owned and after more than 40 years of car ownership it has been the car I have owned the longest...going on 7 years now!
Now as far as the 924 is concerned I would suggest that perhaps you pick one up and drive it for a bit before you sell your 318ti. This will give you an idea if you really want to use the Porsche as a daily but still give you the option of falling back on the old reliable BMW. Nothing wrong with having a pair and a spare and the 924 will be cheap to keep with classic insurance and all. BTW, aside from my 318i and '87 944 I just picked up an '80 924 to play with also...but that's an upcoming story !

The 924S engine is a very simple to work on. What gave you the indication that it was not?

Going a bit OT here but mainly ditch the smog/o2 sensor stuff, get a ROW CIS head&air filter assy, get a ROW spark dizzy and transistorial module, get a set of ROW pistons....install all these and have fun...98ROZ gas only tho.
