|
|
Hi all,
I did a quick search but didn't find much, so I hope you don't mind the newbie question...
I'm looking at a 1982 924 this weekend that has the 3-spd automatic in it. What do we know about these transmissions? Are they reliable?
FYI the car will serve as more of a commuter than a fun car, likely my daily driver for a while. The auto is appealing because I hate a stick in traffic. The rest of the car looks in really good shape and the $3k asking price is pretty decent. I just really know nothing about the auto boxes in these cars.
Any input is appreciated!

Pretty reliable for me.
first changes really quick but second can be quite long if the kickdown is set up properly.
Throttle cable is near impossible to get and the damper plate on the flywheel is expensive.
I have heard a clutch and pressure plate might be a replacement for the damper but cannot confirm this.
Been trouble free for me.
RC fully rebuilt his IIRC. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

There's some for sale on the Pacific Porsche 944 Facebook group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/252487288199713/
My only concern with the auto (that haven't been mentioned already) would be the neutered US 2.0L only has 95-110hp versus the rest of the world having 125hp to work with. _________________ Stefan

This is kinda my concern as well. I'm not looking for a speed demon, by any means. But if it will really kill the fun of driving, then I would think I'll pass. (..again, "fun" being a relative term here..)
I guess we'll find out Sunday. ..maybe. _________________ Doug

Rasta, I'd be seriously interested in this one...

...but this guy has actually raised his price since posting. Just a bit much for an otherwise nice looking car, if you ask me. _________________ Doug

There's a silver 924S for sale just down the street on SE 60th and Flavel St, been sitting for a while.
If I get a chance, I can go check it out if you'd like. _________________ Stefan

Is it advertised anywhere? I'm always curious... _________________ Doug

Sad day for Doug...went to look at / drive this car today and it turns out I don't fit. That notoriously low steering wheel really rubbed my inner leg...very uncomfortable to drive. I know I could swap out the wheel (pretty easily / cheaply, really), but I wonder if an even smaller wheel would still rub. Dang. Can't tell you how disappointing this is for any future 924 purchase potential... _________________ Doug

Both of my cars had alloy spacers between seat and rails. Only about 10mm in height, but once I took them out it made a big difference with head clearance and legs. For a short person they could be doubled up to increase height of seat. This could be the case here. _________________ '79 924.

In the pics, comparing the seat heights to the centre console, it look like the passenger seat is lower than the drivers. _________________ '79 924.

Nearly impossible to believe, I am 6'3", 250, and there is loads of room.

Completely agree. . .plus, not the correct seats for a toofah. _________________ Toofah King Bad

| I'm just wondering why anyone that doesn't have a severed leg would want an automatic Porsche. |

Well that definitely had me scratching my head as we drove away...

They are original to the car, but I didn't investigate a way to lower them. They seemed to have standard 80s adjustment. Regardless...good news if it means I don't have to shy away from 924s. Just need to find one that fits! _________________ Doug
