|
|
My 1980 924 non-turbo is addicted to starting fluid! I can't get it to start cold or hot without ether. Once it's got a shot of starting fluid, it's off to the races, but it's kind of a pain to drive around this way.
A mechanic friend of mine suggested splicing a wire into the power circuit for the fuel injector, adding a momentary switch/button on the dash, and wiring it straight to the battery to bypass the "cold start" system.
I would appreciate any input on this - I have seen multiple posts on the board, but am not sure which is the best fix for me.
Suggestions, please! |

Hmm.
Maybe your air sensor lever or control pistons moves hard?
How is your idle setting?
Cold start system could be defective.

Full disclosure:
I am a Newbie/NOOB
I have only had the car a few weeks, and have tinkered with it on and off, so I haven't done much work on it, yet.
I am not familiar with the fuel injection system on these cars, so I haven't located these sensors or played with the idle. I am eager to learn and get to the bottom of these problems.
Once it is running and has warmed up, the car seems to idle fine, but if you shut it off, you can usually only get it cranked up again with the spray.
The age of the gas in the tank (inherited from the PO) is unknown, and it seems that draining it and replacing it with fresh gas is probably a good place to start. I have also seen some posts which suggest that pulling the injectors and soaking them in some carb cleaner or Techron would also be helpful. |

Hot start can be a little troublesome on these cars.
The fuel pressure on the fuel pump could be incorrect.
Check fuel pressure at the fuel pump.
Cold start valve could be leaking.
Check the cold start valve by removing the part from its location. Leave the fuel line connected. Remove the connector, place the valve over a container and apply voltage to on of the connectors and a ground to the other. Look for a coned shaped injection of fuel. Turn off the power and wait a few seconds. Watch for leaks. If either of the above does not work, replace the valve.
Vacuum leaks.
Carefully inspect the complete engine for any cracked or worn hoses.
Look for connections that may be loose or have come loose.
Fuel accumulator could be faulty.
These hold pressure in the fuel system.
Fuel injectors could be clogged.
Pull the injectors and inspect for correct operation. Apply power to the fuel pump, jump the wire terminal numbers 30 and 87a. Caution fuel will flow from the injectors when the air flow plate is moved in an upward direction. Check for correct operation.
Air flow sensor plate is not adjusted correctly.
Remove the boot and the air filter and check the position of the plate as compared to the barrel. The plate should be even to the bottom of the barrel, a tolerance of +/- .020 is allowed. You can adjust the plate: 1973 1⁄2 - 1975 by bending the clip and 1976- 1983 by adjusting the screw with an allen screw driver. The screw driver is put m at the top of the mixture control unit through a hole. _________________ Our 1983 Porsche 924 project: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?p=364034#364034 |

There is NO reason to wire around the cold start circuit, if you are willing to do some basic troubleshooting.
Mandatory test #1: Smoke test the intake for vacuum leaks.
Mandatory test #2: Test system and control pressures, hot and cold.
(If this is over your head, take the car to a shop that has experience with CIS. . .look for old VWs, Mercedes, Volvos).
You are on the right track with the fuel. Two steps here.
#1: Drain/replace and add a bottle of Techron.
#2: Pull injectors (plus cold start injector) and take them to the shop for servicing. _________________ Toofah King Bad

| Thanks to all for responses. I have some time off next week, so I will be digging into the system, and will be following the suggestions. I will report results then. |
