My mechanic is going to be installing a new speedometer cable in my 88 924s. He said he needs to take out the dash for this job.
Is there any preventative maintenance it might behoove me to have him do while working on this job? Thanks!

He shouldn't need to remove the entire dash, just push the speedometer out from behind after disconnecting the cable and electrical.

While the speedometer is out, you might have him replace the odometer gear as they are prone to failure.

Also, some people like to switch the speedometer and the tachometer positions so that tachometer is in the center, kind of a nice touch on more track-driven cars.

Get a new mechanic. He does not know what he is doing. No need to remove the dash.

If you want to swap the cluster positions of the tachometer and speedometer, here is the "step by step" process. I also added a third bulb to the speedometer case and replaced all other gauge bulbs during this project. Follow the link to my FLICKR album and click "show more" on the title page to get basic info and tools required to complete the project. Then click on the 1st picture to begin stepping through the slides. Detailed instructions are posted below each picture. I do not recommend swapping the tach and speedo unless you REALLY want to do it. However, I certainly recommend adding the third bulb to the speedometer case as well as replacing all gauge bulbs while you're into the dash.

Here are the steps.

1. Unscrew the speedo cable from the OX sensor box
2. Crawl under the dash and press out the multigauge from behind. Unplug it and set the gauge aside.
3. Press the speedometer gauge out enough that you can get to the speedometer cable. Requires some fettling and jiggling
4. Unscrew the speedo cable. This can be a bit challenging as there is usually a blob of tamper proof red paint, but it can be done.
5. One the speedo cable is disconnected from both ends, pull the grommet out of the firewall from the engine side, and then pull the cable through into the engine bay
6. Install new cable, and hook everything back up in the reverse order as above.

It's not necessary to remove the steering wheel (although it does help, and is simple to do...remove the horn button, remove the 24mm nut, and pull the wheel off). It is also not necessary to remove the switch assembly, the bezel, and certainly not the entire dash.

There y'go.

5.5: Buy Euro cable, throw O2 box on neighbor's roof.

+1 to that!

If you want to go this route, there are a few extra steps:
5.6 Detatching the US lower cable from the bottom of the OX box
5.7 Removing the circlip from the spindle dust cap
5.8 Fish the old US cable out
5.9 Feed the new Euro cable through the spindle and reattach the c-clip on the spindle dust cover.

Thanks. I don't know why it stopped updating me when there were replies as I only saw the first one. But anyway, he did it without removing the dash and it's so nice to have a speedometer without a bouncy needle anymore!
