Is there any way to remove/install turbo without removing crossmember? _________________ WBR, Shurick

Maybe it was discussed somewhere, but I can't find. Any tips and tricks? When I was working on turbo I had engine out of the car. _________________ WBR, Shurick

Usually you would remove the exhaust to turbo, exhaust to wastegate, drop exhaust, o2 wire, turbo oil feed and drain, block mount, charge pipes, dizzy - turbo intake boot, drop sway bar to get it out, lot of crazy to get at bolts on the exhaust and a lot of risk of breaking bolts/studs like the wastegate studs to exhaust and manifold to turbo stainless/titanium? $38 each bolts.. stubby wrenches, universals on 3/8 drive with long extensions etc..
last time I did it I did it this way...
you can see the oil inlet line on top and drain on bottom, just loosen the other end of the inlet line and swing it to the side...
6 13mm nuts on studs around the turbine housing, not any harder to get than the exhaust nuts, probably easier, start with the hardest to get at ones to make sure your capable of getting them before you remove too much stuff, and you can leave all the exhaust intact leaving the turbine housing still bolted to everything just pull the core out of it in situ.. Block mount comes out the front with it, probably still hove to drop the sway bar to get it out, may have to dangle the oil cooler/loosen its banjo's to swing lines around..
Oh and you can leave all those expensive aluminum exhaust ring seals alone, just 2 O rings on turbo oil hookups.. Don't loose your engine oil either if you leave the turbo drain line to the pan alone.
Take caution not to damage the exposed turbine wheel while your wiggling it out..
Here at the top right you can see the 6 13mm nuts and plates that hold the bearing housing to the exhaust manifold, soak these with penetrating oil beforehand.. You can even get a zero offset ratcheting box end on half of them..

What is the reason for pulling your turbo?
Don't hold me accountable if my alternative method doesn't work out for you but it took me far less time this way..
I also thought about another way, remove turbine manifold to exhaust manifold, J pipe to exhaust manifold, wastegate brackets, leaving the turbo and wastegate attached to the exhaust and pulling it all out the back including the wastegate in one shot, bet the J pipe to manifold bolts will want to break tho, and the turbo to manifold bolts like to break.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

I want to change turbo to a bigger one - k26-3060, mated with 6.10 stock hotside. _________________ WBR, Shurick

Yup, perfect candidate to just leave the turbine housing on the car..
You can also install it without the comp housing so you can slip the comp housing on after with no bolts to play with indexing it in different directions, then add the O ring and bolts plates after you figure out where you want it..
Warning: these 10mm housing bolts are a bit tougher to get to in situ, may require a multiangle double open end 10mm and/or a cut off one.. Patience...
Like this..
Its a much smaller component this way and you wont have to drop the sway bar and stuff to get it in/out, be very careful to not bang the turbine or comp wheels on anything with them exposed..
Lot more pics and too much explanation here... http://924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=41250&start=0 _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

This plan failed. Nuts are sitting too tight so I can't get them off with a space and tools given. _________________ WBR, Shurick

Take off the oil supply, take off the downpipe, take off the manifold and you have enough space. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Successfully took off the turbo (about three hours of labor), but got a trouble with taking apart a hot side - broke down one of the six studs. Do I need some special stud or can I use any suitable M8 stud?
Or, maybe, someone has a 6.10 hotside in usable condition for sale?))) _________________ WBR, Shurick

If you can get the stud out why not replace it, you can try to find a specialized stud for it if you want but I would just get the highest grade bolt I could and use it cut to fit if I needed to..
I'd just mail you one if you wanted and weren't in moscow.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |
