|
|
Hi,
New owner of an 80 924 Turbo and here with my first post and it’s about wheels and offsets. I know, there are tons of threads here regarding wheels and offset and my understanding thus far is that I will need 53mm (late offset) wheels for my car.
The car currently has its original 4 bolt factory spiderweb wheels. Now I have all of the components from another 1980 turbo car to upgrade the brakes and hubs to 5 bolt pattern and that’s what I intend to do. Hence ... the need 53mm offset wheels.
The car is dark brown and I feel either a set of 15" phone dials or a nice set of cookie cutters would be a nice option. I think a set of cookie cutters with black centers and polished rings would like great. So would a set of bright or grey painted phonies. Here are my options … what I am seeking is advice on what wheel/tire combinations would be functional (no rubbing), aesthetically good looking (no major track width or offset issues), and of course offers great performance. Here goes …
6Jx15 phone dials with 195/65/R15 (4 corners)
7Jx15 phone dials with 215/60/R15 (4 corners)
7Jx16 phone dials with 205/55/R16 (4 corners)
6Jx15 cookie cutter (ET 35) with 195/65/R15 FRONT
7Jx15 cookie cutter (ET 23) with 215/60/R15 REAR
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

On that list I would go for the 16 inch phonies. They look better slightly bigger, imo.
However, I have to add that few wheels look better on a 931 than the D90. _________________ Toofah King Bad

| I didn't consider D90's. They are definitely a classy wheel. I see they come in 7x16 but with a 65mm Offset. Would they fit the front wheel opening? |

My car has 6x16 and 8x16, 52.3 offset (standard setup for 911). There are also 7x16 (front on 944).
Ideal setup is probably 7x16 all around, but there will be far fewer out there.
Anyway, here's how they look:

I'd keep the original wheels, these cars are getting rare in original condition.
If you want more stance, lower it 20-25mm, add spacers or if you have spacers add additional spacers.
The original wheels look great on the 931, phone dials belong to the 2.5L cars. I also fancied phone dials on my 931 but it would just look like a 924S
here is mine, ok a bit ratty as it needs paint but you get the idea

| Thanks for the replies guys. Both the D90's and the spiderweb wheels are classy looking indeed. If it weren't for the fact that my Spiderwebs are 4 bolt I would likely keep them on the car. But since I do have the parts to upgrade the brakes and hubs and plan to do that, new wheels are in order. The D90's are really growing on me as they seem to give the car more "presence" and stature - probably due to their size. |

| I would update the poll to include the D90 rims and the Spiderwebs but I can't seem to edit the poll. |

Agree with Rasta on the D90s. Relatively cheap and plentiful, and look great.
Also agree with morghen that the phone dials will make your car look like a 924S, and IMHO, less distinctive as a result.
Here are a few more options to consider:
7 & 8x16 Cup I
7x16 Club Sport (forged goodness!) I have these on my Euro 931 Club Sport project and love the way they look.
7x16 Gullideckels (forged as well, and a factory option on the 931)
You should be aware that the 6x15 cookie cutters may come with an extra ridge at the edge of the lip that is not on the 7x15 versions. I was going to do this setup on one of my NA cars, but the difference in the casting was too noticeable for my taste. I don't know if all 6x15 cookies have that feature, so YMMV.
Proper Gullideckels have almost a bronzish cast to the finish that could look real nice with your color combo. I have a set of these in very good condition that I'd be willing to part with if you're interested. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

My Gullideckels sure have grown on me.. Forged fuchs quality but they are strange looking and seem to be relatively unloved..
Polished..
Not polished.. and could prolly use a cleaning.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |
