Hey all -
The weather's been nice up here in Wisconsin, so I've been thinking about doing work on the cars since there's lots to be done on each.
For the 1977 n/a, I haven't driven it much in the past year mainly because I've had the 928 to bomb around in instead, but also because the car has become scary to drive. The scariness is because of extremely light and sloppy steering and worn rear wheel bearings causing lateral movement when changing direction (very slight but noticeable).
Besides the bearings and maybe stub axles, I want to replace all bushings on the front and ball joints. I found this kit, listed below:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221185980095?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
I've read somewhere that the ball joint sizes were different for very early cars, however I believe my car was a 1977 1/2 car, as the intake manifold has an early 1977 manufacturing date stamped on it. My question is this the correct kit for the car? Thanks as always _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - sold

Let me know if you need tie rod ends and rubber boots. I have two sets of boots and a set of tie rod ends, all new in the box, that I need to get rid of. Make me an offer. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

I thought that the ball joint was the same, but the spindle and wheel bearings were smaller. I also understood that the change the came with the77.5. No Guarantee on that. _________________ Mike

I almost got the impression the change was related to the 5-lug brakes... but no guarantee on that.
My first 924 was a 77.5' (based on the engine code), and it came with 4-lug brakes and small balljoints... _________________ Vaughan Scott

The difference in ball joints is in the shaft size. Early cars were 15mm dia, including my 77.5. Sometime before 79 the VW stock must have been depleted or Porsche realized they could sell more spares by increasing the pin to 17mm.
AFAIK all 5 lugs should have the later larger ones. Easy to measure first, and the PET won`t necessarily be correct. _________________ World`s quickest 924 2L slushbox

Well, the 77.5 has the four lug wheels, so maybe not this kit? Anyone know where I can find the correct one? _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - sold

For what it's worth, the PET shows the 17mm as 1978 and beyond. _________________ 78 924 |
