1979 924 I replaced the coolant temp switch and checked all relays and fuses. I also hooked up the fans to see if they work, and they do. But, they will not turn on. My squirrel cage will stay on though. If I have to it in traffic when the engine is warm, I have to turn the car off. I know it isn't the thermostat. I took it out. I've replaced ALL the hoses also. Has anyone wired the fans so they stay on?

You say you don't have a thermostat in it at all?

Took it out because i thought it was the reason my engine was getting too hot, so I don't have one in there right now.

I don't understand the squirrel cage fan. Where is it located?

the squirrel cage fan is the little noise maker up by the front windshield center. Small fan enclosed by a little cage.

Ah got it. The later 924's actually had a squirrel cage fan. The one you're referring to is the ventilation fan for the cabin.

Does the car get hot, like into the red zone?

The "squirrel cage" fan has nothing to do with the cooling fans or overheating. Neither does the coolant temp switch.
You need to check the fan switch in the radiator.

What connection? You said you replaced the temp switch. You do know the switch for the cooling fans is a different part right?

You shouldn't run a 924 without a thermostat.

I replaced the temp switch at the top of the radiator. When I jumped those two connections the squirrel fan comes on. Something isn't quite right.

the two pin radiator switch is the one i'm talking about. When that trips, my fans should come on.

If the cockpit fan comes on when you jump the rad temp switch, but the rad fans don't come on, there is something seriously FUBAR'd with the wiring in your car.

Yes, you are correct.
You're going to have to get a wiring diagram & start hunting.

You should reinstall the thermostat or install a new one. Flush the entire cooling system while your at it. It may not be the entire problem but it probably needs it anyway.
