I'm looking for the procedure to set the timing of my 80 turbo. I found this reference in the link on page 5 saying it needs to be set to 20 degrees before TDC. However after that it just says "vacuum hoses". No mention of whether or not i need to disconnect one or plug one into the other. So does anyone have this procedure? Thanks.

Vacuum hoses off and plugged, 20 deg at 2000 rpm.

Thanks guys. It almost started tonight The fuel pump Isn't getting power so I'll investigate tomorrow. I jumped the pump to prime the system though to prevent an eternity of cranking.

Ok so the car runs but I can't tell what my advance is at all. I have the timing light on number 1 spark wire, have the engine idle, and I can't see a single mark on the fly wheel. I've tried many combinations of connected hoses and rotating the distributor, disconnected and plugged hoses and move distributor, even disconnected and connected and revving to around 2k RPM and adjusting and just nothing, No marks. I even painted the marks white and tried all this over again because I wanted to make sure I wasn't just missing them or something. The car idles just fine if I put the distributor in a certain range of adjustment but I cant see a SINGLE mark at all. Am I retarded? Am I blind? Am I losing my mind?

Z1 is TDC so that would be 0 degree's advance I'm assuming.

I just used the same timing light on my 79 NA and was able to see the marks and time it just fine.

What am I doing wrong?

See if your flywheel mark is in the window when the notch in the crank pulley is lined up with the pointer on the front of the engine..

Maybe your flywheel was taken off at some point in time for a clutch job and not put back on in the correct clock position..

K, I'll try it but I think it's been lined up. I'll get back to this in a bit.

Ja, easy to turn the engine with a socket on the crank pulley on the front.

Line up the crank pulley with the pointer on the front, the dizzy rotor should point to #1 plug wire and the flywheel timing mark should be visible and aligned with the pointer in the window on the bell housing.

Everything lines up. Cam lines up with Z1 and front mark. I'm at a loss.

And rotor points to wire you are using on timing light? Do you have an advance timing light?

Yes, I managed to get it. The problem was something really stupid too. The timing light has an inductive amp clamp, so when I put it on spark wire 1, it rested over spark wire 2 and must have been picking up its signal and throwing it all off.

Jesus, the little things get me every time. Just like this tachometer problem im chasing, but may have found to be a crap connection behind the fuse/relay box.

Completely unrelated but I also found a coolant hose I forgot to tighten when I revved the engine and it shot off, blowing coolant everywhere .

I can only imagine your guys' impressions of me, lol.

That's an understatement. Keep on plugging, you're doing great. It's good to see a 931 being brought back to life rather than scrapped/parted.
