Hello guys

First time poster, long time reader.

My family and I have built a 924S lemons car and the thing is pretty solid (400+ miles at Sebring last weekend) however the suspension is still all factory and worn out. I would love to throw the spec3 suspension at it but that's a little too excessive.
My knowledge of this platform is pretty slim so I am reaching out on this site. Definite things going on the car are Dunlop Star Spec II tires 205/50R15 and new Bilstein shocks and struts as I see no need to go front coilovers. From here there are a few options that I'd like your opinions on.
Which front spring should I use? Will an OEM 944/turbo/S2 spring suffice or would a lowered Weltmeister spring be better? If so which spring rate and would I need to go up in the torsion bar? Finally what factory sway bars should I use?

Really appreciate any help you can give me.

Suspension prep article is here:

http://www.924.org/techsection/SuspensionPreparation.htm

If it were me, I would go for the stiffer weltmeister springs, and 25mm torsion bars. It will firm up the ride, but not be so stiff as to be obviously non stock.

As for the sway bars, I would go with the largest factory pieces you can get from the junk yard. 26.8mm front from a later 944 or 968 and a 19mm rear.

Many thanks!

Would you recommend adjustable strut tops or is sufficent camber achievable without?

Adjustable strut tops will probably cause you penalty laps. The cheap ones (Mookeh from eBay) will raise the front end because of the design and you'll risk running out of strut travel and that makes for a very, very long race.

You can usually get a decent amount of camber with the stock pieces. Slotting the struts might gain you a little more. You're not going to have very sticky tires to work with anyway. Remember these are long races, so comfort should be a consideration and expect the car to go off the track so a softer suspension might survive the punishment a bit better.

Speaking of which, don't forget to "box" in your steel control arms and drill out the ball joint mounting holes for larger, 8mm hardened bolts to help reduce the chances of bending/breaking the smaller 6mm boots that come with new balljoints.

CIP1.com has HD Super Beetle torsion bars for a decent price and they fit the 924/944. Again, if you're caught, expect penalty laps.

The largr factory rear bars available can still be ordered from Porsche, but you'll be facing penalty laps for that.

There's a really good suspension thread here in the Performance Section with references to the article on Clarks-Garage that talks about the different stock pieces available. Which as Rasta mentioned would not cause a penalty hit.

I do have a set of Weltmeister lowering springs I'd make you a heck of an offer on. Should fit in a large flat rate package from USPS.

Good luck!

Ive gotten about -2,8 -> -3 degrees of camber up front with stock adjusment,. Dont know how much the star specs want but that ought to be enough..

I wouldnt box the arms, way to much work but whats the point on a car like this. Its better to have weak arms that deform instead of deforming suspension points when you go into the barrier. Ive never seen a 924/944 steel arm getting damaged from track racing, neither sprint or endurance.

the 250lbs weltmeister fits well to the 25,5 torsion bars from the 968. But I had to cut them down a bit to get around the SUV look. I would rather go for a cheap coil over conversion, but I guess that will catch to many eyes.

On my car I have the cip1 torsion bars mentioned in the post above, 28mm, they need around 350 lb springs though, so there you really need to convert the front struts to get the correct springs.

For a race car the latter option is best, it would even be preferable to have a much stiffer car than that. But ive driven the 250lbs/25,5 setup aswell on a 924 with stock sway bars, and its a big improvement anyway, and was very well balanced.

And Ced, Chump cars aren't supposed to be full race suspension, so one needs to be subtle.

Luckily LeMons uses a different rule set and judging is complete BS and mostly based on bribing. (Remember LeMons is a party where a race breaks out, Chump is a Race where a Party breaks out.)

I was able to get around -2.4 degrees on the stock suspension on our 924S, and running Direzza II tires (same as you are planning) we actually had a little bit too much camber. We ran this in Chumpcar, but the tire rules are the same essentially.

You should be fine, but keep in mind the clearance between the inner tire and the spring will be very small.

I cut the factory springs down so that the car was lowered by about 1".

I ran the Direzza DZ102 tire on the weekend and you are correct that in 205/50R15 it is very close to the standard coil, but just enough space. As there is no decent tire for lemons and chump in the 225 size I will not worry about going coilover front for clearance purposes.

Guys, I've stumbled across a pair of M474 front springs. Will these fit onto the 924S?

Thanks!!
