so every 924 I've ever owned (4 thus far) never showed any indication of the block being painted....either the paint just burned off or it was never coated...so that is the question...did the factory paint the blocks before assembly or where they bear cast iron? if they were painted then the paint was the crappiest around because as I mentioned non of my cars showed any indication of paint and all except one were below 100k miles on the odometer.

Image of a brand new engine on the shelf:

…hard to tell, but my vote is an unpainted engine looking at this short block.

awesome pic harm! It certainly does look like raw cast iron from that photo. one would think that if the blocks were painted there would be some trace of paint somewhere...and in my years owning and playing with these cars I have yet to find even a flake.

you can see some rust forming around where the oil filter goes...looks to me cast iron that had a little oil bath.

Definitely painted black. There was no rust on mine whatsoever when I removed it. It was a semi gloss or satin black. It was completely original when I got it. I prepped it and painted it with por15 years ago. The torque tube was also painted the same color. All of the mating surfaces were bare steel that's why the oil filter area is rusty.

How would they have produced the blocks?
Paint the block black before milling it down,
And complete it by instaling the freeze plugs?
Still hard to tell…

Yes. Cast, paint, mill, wash & install plugs. I didn't take pics before I painted mine but it was obvious that's how it was done.
Remember, Porsche didn't manufacture the blocks and they were in several different cars.

I looked at the other 3 931's I have, all have various amounts of paint still on them. 1 is mostly rusty with some small patches and flakes of black. Another is completely black with the mounting points (machined after painting) showing surface rust.

On the assembly images shown above it looks as if the exhaust-side engine bracket is infact unpainted bare steel;
Similar surface as the exhaust.

Why I thought the engines were bare steel?
Working on old VW type17 engines I was used to a thick layer of paint that cracks and chips over time.
The three Toofah engines I hold have long lost their layer of paint; No trace of black paint anywhere on the surface.
Maybe it is a combination of a. it's just a thin layer of paint applied by the factory, and b. the sea climate and salt on winter roads?

Cheers Paul. Keep in touch!
If anyone knows what the source/book is that carries these assembly images, I'm all ears

O/T
Proof that Toofah's aren't compiled of cardboard

Kind regards,
Harm.

just as a quick question, is it critical you assemble the torque tube and the engine with your flies undone? poor guy looks like a doesnt even get the time after a restbreak to do em up! german efficiany at its peak - over a year you will be able to assemble 13 more torque tubes in this fasion!

tbh i found those german dungaree ideas the other guys wearing a real pain when you go to the toilet! plus it seems to get your shirt all scrunched up if your bending, so i think guy with those open flies might know what he is doing. some great shorts of the factory floor tho.

I agree. This seems to be in line with what I've found. My AZ car had good paint on the block. The block with the least paint/most rust was also the one exposed to the elements the most. Eventhough the paint was in good shape, it wasn't difficult to remove.
